Bummed to hear about Joey’s death.

His album with Danny Gatton is one of my all time favorites.

My wife has respectfully stepped aside from Emmylou tomorrow night, so although it’s a huge part of our background soundtrack, I’m trying to get our eldest daughter up to speed for Wolf Trap on Saturday.

I'm not a huge Emmylou Harris fan, but her version of Neil Young's "Wrecking Ball" (from her album of the same name) has got to be one of my top 10 desert island recordings.
(Admittedly it would be an atypical outlier compared to the other 9, but it's a gem any way you look at it.)

I don't listen to much modern music or frankly nearly as much music of any sort as I used to but I do like some YouTube rabbit holes on some favorites. This popped up on my YouTube feed yesterday and I found it interesting. It's about Roxy Music and some of the clips from music even from the 1970s sounds fresh and relevant even today. To my ears their best material has aged extremely well. And Avalon is a masterpiece.

Additionally, I recommend the following documentary film about Sparks. They're another quasi obscure but highly influential duo. Commercially borderline irrelevant, at least in their US homeland, but a prodigious producer of material, much of it really good.

This is the trailer. If you're a fan at all I highly recommend watching the whole film. It's fun.

I love, love, love Roxy Music! Their first five make a steady progression from ground-breaking art rock to utterly sublime, understated ensemble rock ("Nightingale" reliably gives me chills. As does "Just Another High".)
And Paul Thomson is probably the most underrated drummer in rock 'n' roll.

Just heard this on KPIG and it caught my ear. From the album Things Change made in 2001... I sure likes me some irony.

Rain. Rain on the metal roof of the porch. Rain on the metal roof of the porch looking out at the garden plants puffing up all feeling good. Rain water feels different, tastes different, sounds different than hose water and the plants like it. It is a good sound.

Emmylou was amazing. 75 years young and her voice filled the place.

Two bbq on tap for the weekend so working on a playlist that doesn’t make me look two decades older than my early 40s age…

I'm seeing him in a few weeks, in Keene NH. We got a mailing from Shalin Liu with their fall-winter schedule and there he was! I got all excited about seeing him in that lovely room but, of course, the show was sold out. Luckily I tracked down his other local shows and found one around the corner from my nephew in Keene. We're going to introduce him and his wife to RT.

Was this a solo show or with the trio?

He began solo but the second half he was joined by Zara Philips. How big is the room in Keene? The Nippertown review of the Caffe Lena show stated "the focused force of his music felt outstanding." Good description.

It looks like a small theater. A lot bigger than some of the places he's playing this tour. The Google says 750 seats. For comparison, the community arts center he's playing in the Boston suburbs has 270.

And I may listen to Taylor Hawkin’s BBC “master class” (interview with drums) again today. That just makes me happy, RIP.

I saw Don Byron at Opus 40 playing outside with Rashaan and Russell Carter and Emanuel Ruffler. It was rough and uneven in parts but always interesting and plenty of risk taking with periodic transcendence, which is why I like Don Byron. Need to listen to Bug Music again. This concert was nothing like Bug Music. But still...
