Love this band. Sad and sweet simultaneity.

Their album is good! The lyrics come from a Korean folk song cycle called Sugungga, which is part of Korean minyo, a kind of folk song/folk singing, that is present in both Korean and Japanese culture in related though different forms. Minyo has been fading so some younger artists have been digging back into and re-inscribing/restoring its position as a performed art with variable accompaniment. So very electic because the current expression draws in whatever else the particular artists are listening to - rap, jazz, African forms, Eastern European tonalities, early New Wave, funk, etc. etc. etc. Plus there are varied traditional forms, that while restricting as forms, can be the base for improvisation. The kids are where it is at and they are it.

This breakdown (simplified here by me - there is a lot more information out there) courtesy of my brother-in-law who - as I've mentioned before - does a world music show called Global-A-Go-Go on WRIR 97.3 Richmond VA. He recommends a Japanese group, Minyo Crusaders.

I really enjoyed that. Their music reminds me of Esquivel! minus the irony.

My buddy who lived in S Korea for a while tuned us into Say Sue Me - Korean folk rock. It's pretty great and a nice detour from most of what I listen to.

Wow, talk about a throwback! I first discovered Alan Ross when my Dad saw his name mentioned in the newspaper (he was the opening act for one of Eric Clapton's tours circa 1974 and since my middle name is Alan, Dad was amused). So that was close to 50 years ago

...and today was the first time I ever actually listened to any of his music, thanks to ^^^this post! Thanks.
