PJ is one of the staples I return to, over and over, in between periods of exploring new music. I've always liked the way her live performances expose the bedrock of her songs and arrangements--just great stuff with or without studio effects, perhaps better without.

Way back in the Stone Age when I was a teenager I saw a band play on the late nite TV show "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert". They were really strange, a crunchy power-pop band with a lead singer who sounded like he'd escaped from a opera and a deadpan keyboard player who never, ever, broke a smile even as the camera pushed right up to his face.

I was intrigued and promised myself I needed to hear more of these guys. But then I heard the Ramones or something. It took decades for me to by my first Sparks albums and, well, the moment had passed and while I admired their strange persistent vision, I never dug deep.

But now some guy went and made a movie about them.

So I am working my way through their catalog - A Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing, Kimono in My House, Propaganda, Indiscreet, Big Beat, No. 1 in Heaven, Terminal Jive, Whomp that Sucker and Angst in My Pants so far. They are exactly as unique and fun as I remember.

I'm almost positive my first introduction to Sparks was via that very same episode of Don Kirshner's Rock Concert! ~15-year-old me went out and bought Kimono My House shortly thereafter, and I loved that record ...and then promptly forgot about it when 16-year-old me discovered jazz. But 40-something years later I've listened to Sparks now and again, and yeah, they were definitely cool!

btw, my teenage Doppelganger is Adrian Fisher, the guitarist from Sparks. This photo of him from the back cover of Kimono My House looks exactly like I did when I was 15. Exactly.

Working from the somewhat cool basement room, starting my day with this concert, and probably not drinking hot coffee much longer. Heat's comin'.

Collective of established Australian musicians came together to form 'Company of Strangers' and record together a single album of originals and some covers plus some guest artists - circa early 90's

In anticipation of going to hear the same piece, live in concert, on 19th July.

I loved the music as well, but found myself fascinated watching the feet of the center player. The feet tell the story.

Thanks to @cs124 I’ve dipped straight back into the 90s. Those were good times.

Found an old CD and I've been listening to Blind Faith for the last week.
Some good music on there !
    Ginger Baker's drumming is remarkable.
The lyrics are a bit thin though.

Kinda a ride report but belongs here….

Yesterday was Dennis Elsas’ 50th anniversary of a rock DJ career that started at WNEW-FM.

Today on WFUV (Fordham University’s public radio station where he has worked for the last few decades), from 2-6 they did a retrospective/ compilation show.

So, I put the Crumpton on the trainer and rode from 1:58 until a few minutes ago.

I am a puddle and not because of the workout.

Maybe because I was a child of the era, or because I was a child of NYC, or because I had the honor of being around media and content to pay the bills, this just struck me as one great celebration of radio and music and the people behind the music (Like in the Lennon interview where he talks about being on a show with his idol Chuck Berry).

Excerpts from many great interviews, (Nash, Daltry, Fogarty, Crosby, Elton John, Mitchell, Collins and of course the classic John Lennon interview) plus more, so many great songs that put great and stirring color around the words.

I don’t know if the tears from the joys of memories or the sweat is what’s all over the floor.

Thankfully, the show will be archived at WFUV.org at some point.

If you are interested in the history of RNR, FM radio, or the like; give it a listen when they post it up on their site.

It may not do it for you but the confluence of all that they packed into the last four hours just tickled me.

Edit to put in some links of some of the wet kiss articles that ran pre-show…that I don’t think were over-hyped…

WXPN radio in Philly has great shows all day. I only listen when I visit family in northern NJ (though they are online). Listening to that station led me back to the Waterboys. Wonderfully talented band. Their song lyrics spur a good deal of critical thought and introspection should you be into that sort of thing.
