New turn of event. A colleague of mine has a 2001 ML320 with 70K miles on it that he is most likely willing to part with. One owner, most likely good shape, has been sitting outside, not driven much. I guess this would be my number 1 choice if I can make that happen.

Find me a Bay area Audi A8L (or similar long wheelbase car) for the original budget. we are coming to visit and drive down to Joshua Tree. could make the trip a few days longer to make the drive home with a new to us vehicle.

That'll hold a keg of beer in the back no problem.

In my humble dirtbaggy opinion this is the key to buying a cheap car you can live with: you've got to find the specific individual automobile that looks like it's got good history and hasn't been abused. Best case is when you know the car and the seller like you are talking about now.

Exactly. He bought it new in 2001. I knew him then already. It certainly has not been abused. But sometimes car that sit too much have actually more problems that cars that run all the time. Like right now the battery is flat..... He also has an E500 with a Porsche engine sitting there unused, that would not be $3K though.

It is certainly not a huge car (in fact I owned one for 3 years) but I think with back seat down it does the job.

You've have to forgo the Porsche engine to get an E500 under $3k.

That won't do. We are only halfway to 15 pages.

Not saying there aren’t cars (trucks) that are more huger and I’m sure MB managed to anti-tardis it and make it smaller on the inside than the outside, but to me that goes in the huge car bucket.

for the polar opposite of the $3000 clunker challenge I am in Vegas this week-end for a good friend divorce completion celebration. On the menu this afternoon is driving a GT3RS and a 488 on the track. Should be a lot of fun.

And next you need to find a reason to come to the northeast:
    Land Rover Experience

The Equinox is fine but you want to stay in one of the CHARLES ORVIS INN rooms if you can.

You want a cool vehicle to take your bike to the trailhead? Here's cool:

    (unfortunately, it's a bit more than $3k)

Only jacking around with TT serenity in an attempt to increase the page volume. That Alfa is the bestest though.

That Alfa van looks great but it is even less powerful than a Citroën H, a post 62 VW type 2 or Renault Estafette.

You want HP? Here's HP for you. (assuming a hatchback with a 680 hp V-12 is enough)
