Default Thoughts on the 2020 Defender

I've always lusted after an NAS Defender 90, and with Land Rover about to revive it here in the US, I was really hoping it would somehow hold onto the previous generation aesthetic. So far the leaked images have been a bit disappointing to say the least.

Any other Defender fans here? What are your thoughts on what we see of the latest version?

My suggestion would be to merge this into the https://www.velocipedesalon.com/foru...les-20707.html thread to likely see more feedback.

I would prefer the new Gwagon.

I'd say it is not that bad. Eventually anything modern had to look a bit bland compared to the original. The reality is Land Rover should have made the Defender evolve more progressively in the last 3 decades like Porsche did with the 911 and Jeep did with the CJ and wrangler.

I’ve always liked the utilitarian look of the Defender series. This one looks like it was never meant to leave the asphalt.

Looks can be deceiving. I suspect it’s capable but it appears to have none of that character of the older ones.

I once drove my VW Tiguan over several feet of gravel road and several times in actual rain, pushing the car to its limits.

I agree, Jim. I’ve been an OE supplier to LR for almost 15 years. Their vehicles have tremendous off-road capability. I was involved in vehicle testing during the BMW ownership period. The Germans were amazed by the off-road capability of the Land Rovers - almost as amazed as the Brits reaction to the on-road capabilities of the BMW SUVs.

I don’t hate it... I’ve owned a 94 D90 NAS ST and a ROW 90 with the 200tdi motor. My brother bought one of the last 110’s off the production line and plans to hang on to it. They’re great trucks and very capable but very much like driving a tractor.

Out of the classic, boxy looking Land Rovers, the best combination of value, utility and luxury is probably the LR3 which can be had for a song now.

The new truck was always going to be compromised by modern crash standards etc. I’ll probably go drive one, just for old time’s sake.

There was an article about a driving school LR organized out on Long Island which noted the attendees, all owners, did not know what the transfer case lever was for.

I think they did a terrible job. It looks like any other interchangeable SUV from any other manufacturer. That could be a new Ford.

Why is it so hard to take a classic iconic vehicle and update it without completely missing the mark? The outside styling and shape are already done -- that's what made it iconic to begin with?

    This new Defender -- FAIL
    Toyota FJ Cruiser -- FAIL
New Ford Bronco (from what I've seen so far) -- FAIL

I think Jeep has done a good job not messing up the Wrangler.

Have you seen the Bollinger Motors B1 Electric SUV that is in the works?

I'm kinda down with it. Land Rover was going to do something within their current design language (Evoque, etc) and this is probably the best iteration of a Defender possible in that universe. A Safari roof for the back would be a nice option.

If you want the box on wheels, just get the G-Wagon and be done with it.

Truck grills are now designed to appeal to paramilitary death squads and police departments. They must look angry and aggressive even when driven by cute puppies and ballerinas. Inevitably they will sell most of these to people who need a car to drive from court-mandated anger management class to their divorce lawyer/parole officer/kids' exclusive private day school. And all of them will drive on the Taconic State Parkway.

I drove the Taconic every week for 27 years and the worst, I mean worst in every way, drivers were almost invariably in Jeep Wagoneer variants. Maniacs all. I saw more of them in the trees than any other vehicle.

    Nice Tata.

Preorder now so you can be among the first to rock the flavor of the week in Hollywood / Miami / the Hamptons.

I’m sure there will be favorable lease programs, because this is the automotive equivalent of rent the runway. You want it for a long weekend, not a long term relationship...
