Well, the Hario gear came in and I went to work. I sketched out the dimensions for the stand, confirmed the dimensions of the gear when it arrived and visited my friend's home woodworking shop, where he's always eager to help. I exchange shop time for beer...it's an approved barter system. I finished the maple with six coats of water based poly in order to keep the clear, white look of the maple and the copper has just been cleaned with acetone and brushed with steel wool. I debated over waxing it or just letting it develop a patina, but I'll give my son the choice. Missing from the photo is the the scale/timer which sits under the carafe. Production photos to be posted when he comes home for his birthday in a couple of weeks.

If you solder the joints, you get a guest posting on FNL.

Scott...I pulled out the Bernz-O-Matic and some plumber’s solder for a moment and then common sense kicked in. I did drill the supports near the top and glued in a stainless steel brad for contrast. Production pics to follow when he comes home in two weeks.

Go for it, brazing metals doesn't require much skill and copper is easiest of all. I bet you can learn it in an hour.
