Default 400 to 450mm Steerer Tube

    Hello all,

I am 6’ 8” tall and am looking to build my first set of forks. I have a bunch of silver brazing on water bottle bosses, brake bridges, etc. Definitely a looking forward to the learning process.

My problem is I cannot find a single butted steer tube in 25.4 (has to fit an old 68cm Scwhinn frame) in 400mm or longer. Longest I have found is 350mm and I would like longer. I checked out Nova and Frame builders supply. Any ideas? Can I use straight gauge 4130 and if so any idea on wall thickness?

In 1985 I made one of two 70+cm frames that Cyclery North produced. I sourced (from long gone Dillsburg Aeroplane Works) 1"x.120" wall 4130 for the steerers. (We had a local machine shop ream out the ID at one end for the quill stem and also thread the OD). Were I to do this today with threadless stuff I would consider using a lighter tube (maybe .065") and make an internal sleeve to be brazed in the lower end (much like low cost Euro bikes of yesteryear have had) to act as the thicker butted section.
