I finally looked at my stats for the weekend of riding.

My fastest speed was 43.8 mph (on the shakedown).
Biggest climb was 1,100 ft in 3.5 miles.
Total miles including shakedown = 106.12 miles (roughly 95% dirt roads)
Total feet climbed = 10,295 ft (and I think my Garmin was the lowest of the group)

I'll be in Canada for the next 2 weekends, but I'd be game to get back out there sometime soon.

I should probably get serious about procuring a gravel bike! Safe travels, Will.

    Reporting in:

After talking to several of you folks, I've converted over to a tubeless set-up on this bike. So far, excellent, good feel with a bit lower pressure, set-up was a breeze too. Oh, and I fixed my very un-tidy cable end situation.

Also - I have the nagging feeling of un-finished business up at michaux. i'll be back for the full hundo. Will bring fresh legs and cast iron cookware.

    Excellent!

(Mrs. JoB and I are riding the tandem up to Pine Grove in a little while.)

    JoB,
Tell us more about the tandem. Do you ride it much? Could it be used as a gravel road tandem? Rox and I put many thousands of miles on tandems. We sold our last one because we were hardly riding it anymore. I kind of miss tandem riding and sometimes consider getting another one.

I have been meaning to take a few pics and post them here for advice. It's a Made in the US Aluminium Cannondale RT 2000. It's got STI brifters with V-brakes; no disc brake capability on the fork and what I believe to be drum brake hardware for an emergency brake on the rear.

Tire clearance is solid due to the disc brakes. We rode up Shippensburg Rd. yesterday and when we came to Piney Mtn. Ridge I said, "if we had gravel tires, we'd be going this way instead of 233." I was instructed to outfit the thing with Gravel tires on the spot ;-)

I'll measure clearance in the back and hopefully I can squeeze some 40s in there. It's not tubeless but I'm hoping that a high volume tire will help. Any recs on bullet proof tire/tube combinations?

I will take some pictures when I can. We hadn't ridden it much for a couple years but have been getting out on it regularly as of late. I love it, and the Friday PM loop could be a pretty standard weekday evening ride from the cabin.

Very cool. Our first tandem was a Cannondale RT2000. It met an untimely death and was replaced with a Co-Motion. Your rear hub should be threaded for an arai drum brake. It's used as a drag brake to help control your speed on longer / faster descents.
Hopefully Josh will chime in with some tire suggestions. You should start a new thread with a picture. This is getting off topic from the original post and many may not see it that could give some good advice.

Joe, no tubless on the tandem if tire pressure is > 45/50 psi. You can certainly put a drag brake on that sucker. I might even have a super-dooper-custom shaved down version you can have if I can find it. The trick setup is to add a bar end shifter and use it as a drag brake to keep from overheating your front tire blah blah blah.

Check the WTB Nano might be your sweet spot if it fits. I'm using the TCS "light" version but you should look at the "Comp" which is for tubes and has beefier construction. They roll fast on pavement and seem to hold up pretty well in the PA terrain, rattlesnakes not withstanding.

Get back to me on the drag brake if interested.

2021 is looking promising. Any spring rides planned? I need more bikes in my life.

Good news bad news good news. Fearless route designer Dan has himself a spanky new offroad motorcycle so new routes assured. Bad news is he has a new toy. Good news is he is susceptible to peer pressure.

Speaking for myself I'm not ok with group rides until the folks I'm riding with are also vaccinated. With that in mind myself and Mr. New hotstuff moto will be camping near Pine Grove starting early spring. If you can toe the line than I'm buying the beer and Dan's routes are assured. Deal? Stay in touch.

By late summer and mean late we should be ok for a group ride. Forming up a group reservation will be something that both myself and Moto-man will take the lead on.

    I'm DYIN' to do this.

Vaccination passport and mask in hand. I'm happy to return to a state where rattlesnakes are scarier than COVID.

If Dirt School (kids n beginners mtb skill area) is complete or I can take a break from it, this could be my goal . It would provide some "motorvation' to get in some longer rides and find a modicum of fitness again. First snakebite complete : ). Camping setup is tad minimalist tho.

btw, if anyone should be eating chips...looking at you Josh. Me? I need to stop putting comfort baked goods in the oven.
