And that's the thing - the overwhelming majority of SUVs or crossovers will never even see a gravel road, let alone true offroading.

It all depends on what you've had.... I've been in smaller quicker cars (loved the WRX, didn't have an STI though...) and they can tend to get me in trouble (driving to fast and to aggressive). I don't tend to have the same issue with BOF vehicles and for where I live and play now (small acreage) they can be very helpful.

Don't know if any of this applies to Houston's current ambition but just to offer a point that sometimes moving away from the wagon/euro car VS trend isn't entirely impractical and frivolous.

I've been to Houston's house and I know his area. Daily driver is the theme I'm honing in on and I wouldn't want a giant, old 4x4 adventure mobile as my daily driver there. He did ask us to talk him out of it, keep in mind. If he said, "I'm thinking of buying a totally rad, iconic adventure truck...validate my desires," I'd tell him that they're iconic, desirable and will outlive anything around. But cars like that suck as daily drivers for most people.

And I had a WRX in the past, which got me in trouble. The STI keeps me more in control because it's so much more nuts that I scare myself into driving like a normal person...

Not really...it's nuts and will likely get me into trouble.

Sometimes you just need to let the folks in Fairfax know who is boss.

    V90 Cross Country. Mmmmmmm.

What I really want, of course, is the MB E400 Wagon.
What I'll most likely buy (someday, when the house is "done") is an Audi AllRoad.
What I'll drive until then is the Acura TSX Wagon.
    GO!

I still remember the first time I saw a Gelandewagen in the US.

I was passing through Stockbridge. There, at the vintage Mobile station, replete with a large enamel Pegasus sign, was a 2-door G-Wagen parked between the pumps. As traffic crawled by, I noted the his and hers gas tanks. The driver and passenger were filling the tanks simultaneously, wearing matching Ray Ban aviators. I think the gentleman wore a cravatte. It was like they fell out of a Robb Report photo shoot, or a Mad Magazine satire of a Robb Report photo shoot.

One thing was certain: In spite of the recent rains, they would have no problem extracting their vehicle from the parking field apres Tanglewood. This was the late 80s, long before Escalades. I felt a small twitch of pity for anyone in a lesser vehicle that day...

What Houston really need as a daily driver is a Pinzgauer.

But an FJ80 is fine really.

Ha. Me and a buddy from work have a "Pinzgauer fan-club" - always sending each other cool pics/listings we find of these.

Every other week I think of buying one then I remember the face my other half would do if she saw it parked instead of our car ha ha.

Many years back, as we rolled into a parking lot at the end of a ride, a friend of mine stopped and scrawled "V-I-A-G-R-A" on the back of a dusty Hummer.

    My point.

Houston asked to be talked out of this.

In spite of great pics and cool bikes, he’s not Watson (yet).

Watson is in the dirt everyday, and his FJ makes sense.

For Marin school pickups and runs to the farmers market, I wouldn’t waste semi vintage FJ miles on pavement.

That sort of FJ is no different than a G-Wagen or a Hummer, IMO.

    Trust me, I should know.

I’m really trying to help here.

Get a stripped down white Highlander with steel wheels and pretend you're in the UN.
Make sure you have tinted windows so no one can see your cupholders.

You got kids. There are camp sites out here that you cannot get to in a Subaru. Get the Land Cruiser already.
    Got some cash
    Bought some wheels
    Took it out
    'Cross the fields
    Lost Control
    Hit a wall
    But we're alright

Yeah, but what do we know, us effete Northeasterners with our A-wagons?

Nah. Gotta bring set-ups for good food and coolers for beer and long-travel enduro sleds.
