Then you probably know the weak points of the car (head gaskets and the PHH) and what to look out for when looking to purchase. Also, although the 80 series look similar, there are some differences that make the later 80's more desirable, like the OBDII port found on the late 95s thru 97. This port is handy-dandy when diagnosing and monitoring the car's vitals.

But I also like my vehicle to start every time I turn the key and successfully take me to and from my destination.
I also like modern amenities like A/C that is cold, nice seats (in good condition), navigation, integrated bluetooth, and so on.

With all due respect, some of you are talking about the car (specifically the 80 series Land Cruiser) like it's a 3 year old Pontiac. Yes, I know Pontiac's last year was 2010, but you get my point...

My 95 TLCs has every amenity Boots2000 described plus backup camera (very simple head unit replacement), heated seats, the ability forge a 4 foot deep river - no shit - and get me home.

Perhaps Houston's request for info regarding an FJ80 Land Cruiser (aka 80 series, built from 1990-1997) has been lost in the conversation. They are different animals than the 40 and 60 series rigs.

May not be as viable in CA as it is in TX but a couple of my friends own JDM Cruisers from these guys. Been very happy with them, diesel gets better gas mileage and could always be converted to biodiesel if you want extra green points.

It's an FJ80! It's designed to go 500k miles lubricated by raccoon piss with tied-together rubber bands for fan belts.

I'd trust most well-sorted FJ80s to fire up and run forever over most newer cars. ymmmv. I mean, talk about hunting down simple battery drains on a newer anything...hard pass.

ha, it will need to have a bed for me to sleep in as we dont have a doghouse. I am looking for later models. However the highend shops make what they call a FJ140 which is a FJ60 body mounted onto a FJ80 chasis. I think I would have to add another 0 plus more for that one.

As long as the FJ80 is sane there is no big risk. Sure a FJ80 is a barge, do not handle like a small sporty hatchback, use more fuel than a more modern car would do but it is comfortable enough, is virtually unkillable if properly maintained and can be daily driven easily. You guys are talking like Houston was about to buy a rusty pre WWII car he just found in a barn.

At least it won't fail pathetically because of some electronic hazard like some newer audi wagon do (trust me we have ton of these in that small country in the middle of the alps).

Thomas! I am surprised to hear this coming from you. I agree of course - Houston should definitely get a squirrel stomper like the Land Cruiser - but I thought you'd be recommending an electric postman golf cart for high efficiency and easy parking. Nothing like a 4WD vehicle to bring out the 'Merican in a European I guess!

BTW Jeep has a plug-in hybrid Wrangler slated for 2020.

Perhaps. There's nothing boring about weaving around traffic in an STI, though. And after almost 24 years of driving 4x4s as my daily driver, including multiple jeeps and toyotas, having a car that jumps when I want, stops on a dime when I need, and gets slightly above atrocious gas mileage is a joy. And don't get me started on the V90 Cross Country as an SUV killer.

We recently replaced a Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 with a V90 CC wagon. The V90 is better in pretty much every way for regular (non offroading) usage.
