Looking for tips on how to make or acquire a simple lug vise?

Farr, Anvil, Torch + File all make them. Maybe Farr doesn't anymore I seem to remember stock being really low last time I checked.

I made my own. It's pretty simple, just took some .058 4130 stock and cut a slit in it. Drilled and tapped a hole and use a bolt to expand it. I made a 28.6 and a 31.8 version. I'll take a photo of it and post it.

You said basic, and this is that:







Works quite well actually. Recipe is as follows:

1"x.065 4130 tubing, 1" 1018 rod, 1" 6061 rod, 1.5"x.250 6061 and some 1 1/8"x058 4130.
M8 x 1.25 x 200mm socket head cap screw.

I'm sure you can figure the rest out from the pic's. You'll need a lathe.

I made something very similar in principle, but turned from solid brass. It was the first serious thing I made on the lathe, and I’m pleased with it. It’s mostly straightforward turning, albeit with some fun doing matching tapers - a mill would make the slots and holes easier, but it was easy enough with a drill, hacksaw and files.

Ironically since making it I’ve had no cause to use it, but I’m sure it will do well.

Made one of these this weekend. Works well enough, easy to make and, as Dazza might say, "cheap as chips"

I don´t know if it helps, but I use a cheap old 1 1/8" quill stem with a few sleeves, and it works well. It´s a steel stem and i cut down the handlebar clamp, so I can move it in the vise.

I use a 1" aluminum rod and a 1 1/8" steerer with no modifications. Don't judge me

I made these recently from solid aluminium round. Just bored it out so there was enough to have a tapered inner leading edge. Then made the wedge to suit and use a wingnut to do it up. Works very well.
