While visiting with our youngest at school yesterday, we stopped by for a brew at Stauf's Coffee in the German Village section of Columbus. Anytime that I see a roaster when I walk into a shop, I know that things are going to go well.

Home made Manual Espresso Extractor yields a super good liquid.

    Clyde!

    It's super easy.

1-Grind beans, fill portafilter basket and tamp
2-Meanwhile, heat water with whatever device I have on hand (electric or stove kettle)
3-I found that heating the device tube yield a better espresso so I now I do it as well as heating the cup with hot water.
4-Assemble the top device with the lower part which includes the portafilter basket. It is done with a standard tri-clamp and gasket.
5-Fill tube almost toped with hot water.
6-Insert UHMW rod with quad ring seal and push.

I recently added a stainless steel double wall instead of a pipe insulation and I might add a lever just so my girlfriend can use it.

Hilarious. Nice work man. Would it be asking too much to see this thing in action?

I'll try to shoot something in my morning coffee break.

    Hi Josh,

As hilarious as is looks, it works! And I can carry it at work or when I work away from the office.

It takes more time than a full automatic machine, but it is part of the ritual.

Most people would not like this because it is complicated and they would need to actually put effort to get their espresso, but I did it only for me and it takes just a small space in the cupboard so nothing to clump my kitchen counter top.

It is not perfect yet, I'm still workin on a few things but it is close to my tastes.

Outstanding. What I love about it is the portability and that you science'd the out of it. You thought about orifice size, column pressure and alot more obviously. Looks like a perfect shot. Seventeen'ish grams yes?

    You've got yourself a kickstarter.

    Thanks!

Yes 17ish grams, I weighted beans once but I now just use a mark on my porlex grinder. The shot take a little more time than it should but I'm using lighter roast beans so it's ok. Well it's good too with darker roasted bean but it is less on my palette of taste.

The shot is great. I even did a taste test at a friend café with a commercial Rocket machine and it was sooooo close I'm sure blindfolded most would'nt be able to tell which one was made by which machine.

Shoot, you should rig the whole thing so it sits in a caulking gun and you could advance the plunger by squeezing the handle.

Yes / No. He is getting alot more pressure behind the plunger and actually extracting the beans. Pretty effin' cool...and hilarious because you D.I.Y.'d the heck out of that. Love it.

Good idea! I'll see if I can fit mine over the device.

As TT said, I get a lot more pressure than the aeropress (I own one by the way) so I get a proper 30-36ml espresso shot.

I googled that. Pretty awesome rifle. Not that I can fire a bullet with my device but I could break someone skull for sure with a good swing.

I sometimes go from Italy to France in a 1969 Fiat 500. I take some freshly ground beans and a small caffetiere (is that what you chaps call a French Press). I do not have to hide it under the car and it is unable to try to shoot M. Macron. A very poor man's Day of the Jackal.

That's great looking espresso. Just make sure the container is tough -- I did something similar and shattered the jar.
