I'll predict a fair amount of trouble for the drone operator. In NYC, that would begin with a charge of reckless endangerment. Not sure how California deals with drones.

I received a bebop drone a few months ago that I won at a raffle. It is operated using the smartphone. I only tested it 3 times since but already lost connection with the drone once when the flight application crashed and I only managed to regain control at 11% battery level. Thanksfully the drone was hovering and not moving for minutes when I lost control and I could ask the few kids who came out of curiosty to clear the area in case it started to do nasty things.

Another thing that concern me is out of the box there is absolutely no security. The drone works as a wifi access point. I have to check if I can supply a password because as of now I have no idea what would happen if someone tries to connect to my drones wifi when I'm already operating it.

I'm definitely not ready to operate it in crowded areas or close to any form of traffic. The good thing is it is a small drone at around 1lb and the damage it can do are very limited.

They are no longer permitted for World Cup ski races after this near-miss:
