    Default Which Peter are you?

The Peter Principle is an observation that the tendency in most organizational hierarchies, such as that of a corporation, is for every employee to rise in the hierarchy through promotion until they reach the levels of their respective incompetence.

I think that most people worry about promotion over whether that they can do their perspective job to the best of their abilities. One would think most people would be embarrassed to be promoted above their knowledge always living with the fact that they will one day be found out.

Too many people are blind to their limitations; they just see the money and/or the power.

One would have hoped but, alas, it's not what I've observed. My observation is that it's the best cheerleaders that generally get promoted.

I have had this fear for 20 years. So far my boss hasn't figured it out!

I'm a university professor. In order to become a science prof, you have do be good at designing and performing lab experimentation which, for the most part, you do on your own. When you become faculty, you suddenly become an independent businessman who has to support their own laboratory by getting grant revenue, hiring and motivating staff, managing the projects of your staff, budgeting and doing some university administration. You have to teach too. None of these skills are taught beforehand and none can be practiced before you end up as an Assistant Professor in the deep end. I'm OK at teaching but I completely suck at all financial and administrative tasks. Universities are complete embodiments of the Peter Principle. So many professors seem befuddled and confused because we are.
