High security locks?

Embarking on homeownership and changing the locks is upon us. I'm feeling a bit lazy and don't really want to add lock changing to the to-do list, so I called a Locksmith. He has a high-security deadbolt option that is 3x the price of regular locks (installed)... $300 vs $900.

I haven't given the two choices much thought, but it seems like if thieves really want to get in, won't they just bash any of the windows (that don't have bars) and get in that way? Currently there are plenty of windows on the house w/o bars and nobody on the relatively densely populated area (in the city) has bars... maybe some on the basement windows.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Now, as you noted, security is for most individuals about making things hard enough to not be worth it. I pick locks for fun. I have a standard cylinder lock on my front door. Everyone makes their own choices on this one though.

Windows will always be a weak point. We have impact windows though since we live in Florida. For locks, we went with commercial Medco locks. We became friends with a locksmith when we locked ourselves out of our last detached garage. The locksmith picked the Schlage lock and said to buy Medco next time. People here don't typically pick locks though - they like to smash windows or pry windows out of the frame if they can.

Exactly. I can pick the locks on my own house but there are easier ways to break in. I think my dog is probably my best security tool. Sometimes delivery people ring the bell and re-position several steps back in case they need to run for it.

You just want to be the harder target. A good deadbolt is enough in most places.

I live in the mountains and lock the shit out of everything, my neighbors don't. I'm paranoid.

We use Medeco double deadbolts when we are away. Securing the door makes the entrance and exit a bit more obvious to the neighbors and keeps the safe from walking away.

Not trying to be a smart@ss but the thing that keeps the safe from walking away is a button underneath the safe >> silent alarm and a 1" bolt into the floor joists.
