Default my brief ride on windows 10

    I have w 7.
    works ok for me...
somehow I must have clicked on update to 10... inadvertent for sure.
dicked with it for 15 minutes and reverted to 7.

my interest in relearning this stuff is extremely low and my desire to redo sites, etc very low.

im sure some/ many of you have made this move
    any comments overall?

seemed very fast in my brief window.
    im sure its better.
    maybe eventually.

Windows 7 works for me. Until I com to the conclusion that the solution is no longer optimal I have no interest in 'upgrading'. Right now, Microsoft is selling something I don't need or want. Kind of the way I feel about electronic shifting and disc on road bikes. I'm from Missouri. -Mike G

I think the update program is getting more sneaky. My w7 system also got magically upgraded as well... So far it has been fine but I disabled almost all of the new stuff...

The world sure has changed. I can remember the days users were excited about upgrading and Microsoft charged. Now they need to prod and trick.

    Steve:

I was an early adopter and have been quite happy with 10. Additionally, I have found 10 to be more stable than any of the past MS OS.

I am also a beta tester for Win 10 at work.

    I work in Technology.
Have not upgraded personal computer from Win7 to Win10 out of laziness.
    Windows 10 is mo' better.
You give up more personal information.
But, you have probably given up more of it already to Google, Facebook, etc so why stop now.

The only way to avoid Win10 is to go with Apple (who also wants all of your personal information), stick with Win7 until MSFT and others stop supporting it, or hand in all of your digital devices and go live off the grid in a concrete bunker.

    Happy computing!

Or use a Linux operating system like Mint which is safe, secure, easy to install and use, and free. Unless you're a gamer or use some sort of proprietary software there isn't much a modern Linux OS can't do and the transition is no harder than moving from Windows to Mac or visa versa.

Windows 10 is automaticilly updating on machines and it's not something you specifically have to agree to. It happened on our shipping computer last week and caused all of our printers and support equipment to stop working. Restoring back to the previous was easier than sorting all that crap out. I'm not against it but I've got better things to do than waste time on the phone with UPS so our shipping platforms are functional again.

I've been happy with linux for years. There are lots of stuff I can do better than with a windows or apple computer but I'm a unix sysadmin so I'm just used to it and simply understand it better.

I still have a windows setup at home for my partner as she somehow wanted her MS publisher app. I upgraded it to windows 10 and I reckon it is faster booting than windows 7. There are a lot of things to disable (don't use automatic settings when upgrading !) but it is still miles better than that POS that was windows 8. At least with 10 you don't have to be constantly annoyed by that tablet interface.

I'm still on XP. I think the time has come to move on to something else. I am tempted to try Ubuntu, or something Linux based, but I am a bit out of my element with computers in recent years. My needs are simple, email, internet, maybe a spreadsheet here and there.

    Any advice for me?

Exactly, Linux while great is not ready for prime time and the average user. Who are they going to call or email when something stops working?

I'd disagree with this. Most linux versions are one-click install and pretty much everything works outta the box. It's no harder than installing windows 10. A few years ago you needed to be able to write code to get linux installed but that's totally changed over the past few generations and the Ubuntu stuff is to thank.

If that's too much hard work then you can buy a system pre-installed and ready to roll from System76 - Ubuntu Laptops, Desktops, and Servers

Modern linux is really good for your average computer user but it needs to shed it's reputation for being difficult.
