    Default Cycling in Grapevine Texas

I'll be spending a week in the area in June for a conference, probably staying at or near the Gaylord (which doesn't look too bad!).

What are the cycling opportunities in the area? Is it worth it to bring or rent a bike or are the roads a disaster with traffic?

I can't tell much by looking at a map and prefer to rely on advice from Vsaloners.

    Thanks

Tons & tons of great road riding. There are also incredible mountain bike trails basically walking distance from where you're staying. Call Mad Duck and ask for Clarence 817 442-0339

Any other ideas? They don't answer the phone or return messages.

Call Richardson Bike Mart in Frisco. They are the next closest significant shop and because of their location on the northwestern edge of Dallas, they run a lot of rides that head in that direction.

Grapevine is a great old town with a pretty main street and nice neighborhoods. It sits on the north side of DFW Airport. Your best rides go up north from Grapevine and around the lake to Flower Mound. Almost any road in Flower Mound is great riding. Focus on the roads north of 114, west of 121, and stay closer to the lake and farther from 35E. For example, lots of twists and turns, but Fairway Drive around the eastern tip of the lake and then zig zag to Simmons/Bruton Orand Road. From there, you can get on beautiful pastoral roads towards the west. It's easy to put on 80 miles.

Closing the loop on my own thread.

Mad Duck doesn't rent. Richardson rents but I've never encountered someone less anxious to do business than the guy I spoke with. The conversation began with "Why would you want to rent a bike. It's hot here." Then after several back and forths, the conversation ended with "I'm not even sure we have anything in your size. It's all on-line now-a-days, you'd have to check there."

So I guess I'll bring running shoes instead.

You might have good luck at Bikes Plus. There is a location in Flower Mound and one in Coppell. Great folks at both places.
Probably could rent from them. There are a lot of group rides in this area. Could steer you to a ride. Could potentially take you to one.

Too late. I'm here and about to leave. The guy at the one shop was correct. It's effing hot here! 102 yesterday afternoon with no discernible air to breathe. I ran two days---if you can call what I do running--and that was just stoopid given the heat. Hotel gym the rest of the week.

    Thanks
