Suppose I was going to do a little rambling and I'm not in love with tent camping 100% of the time. Don't get me wrong, I love tent camping it's just not something I'd desire every night for a couple weeks at a time.

Talking this out, because y'all are tolerant and I'm ignorant!

I'm thinking about finding a used not abused small travel trailer to haul my bike and as a place to sleep. Something like an Airstream Flying Cloud 19' has enough head room even for a tall ape like myself. The trailer saves me from campfires for cooking, easy in/easy out setup etc. It's a small rolling home nes pas? My pickup truck is already setup for towing.

I'd park in various AWESOME places and have daytrips from the campgrounds returning to use campground showers etc.

Sounds like most excellent adventuring. Travel with your trailer if you like, but when I had a pickup truck, I was *yay close to building a sleeping deck in the back. When I get a truck again I'll do it for realz this time. If you have a camper shell and an 8' bed, you're set. You have the space under the sleep deck for storage and you can build a little slide-out cooking unit from under the deck to the tailgate. Can be as fancy or as no-frills as you like. Cook with white gas or electric, put a little marine battery in there for lights and a fan. Towing's no a problem for you, but still - it'll be easier to turn around, drive on rutted NF roads, etc, and you get to build a cool little thing.

Not opposed to a slide in but it's going to get cramped quickly.
The Airstream is just an example. It has interior height I need and good resale.
Subsequently I've found a couple small "toy haulers" that looks really good AND an obscure Airstream called "Basecamp" google it, it's clever.
Look at this: 2016 Octane Super Lite 161 | Jayco, Inc.
Now suppose two formerly good friends were to do this. You could basecamp or leapfrog down the road and really cover some ground.
My pickup truck is getting old, this could be a lovely way to put a fork in it ;)\

Yes, I have restored trailers. Only for clients, not friends, Toots!.!.

A labor all in itself. Now, gutting a trailer and building it out is a different story.

I lived in a 6' slide in with my now wife for 8 months in south america, it was tiny and you have no personal space. A trailer will have more room to walk around and you can leave it set up and drive the truck. Look at the little fiberglass options (casita is the only one I can think of) for better weatherproofing, wood frames suck. If you want to camp in crappy weather go bigger than you think you need, for nice weather small is ok as you will be outside alot. Look at expoportal for lots of inspiration.

This is something I have spent tons of time thinking about and of course taking no action on. The rub for me is small size and a shower. Because after a day of riding I want to shower.

The Jay Feather Ultralight looks nice. 2015 Jay Feather Ultra Lite Travel Trailers | Jayco, Inc. Used they can be had for $10k.

However if it is just me on the trip (no wife), I sleep in the back of my truck with a shell on it and shower at the campground or if I strike gold, the rec center.

No toilet or shower though, its much closer to camping it appears.

We saw a bunch of these Forest River R-pods on the side of the road, and they seem pretty cool, although a bit ugly in the interiors/exteriors department: r-pod Travel Trailers by Forest River RV

My girlfriend got into looking into this stuff pretty closely, were ideally keeping an eye out for shells that we could build out. I don't know if its in the cards at any point soon, but fun to think about anyways for sure. We really liked the idea of a sort of fiberglass egg type shell.

I was leaning towards the Ford Transit 4x4 thing that came out not too long ago.

I was an inch away from getting a 35' motorhome. it was really really simple- no popouts or gadgets but it had a generator, basic lights, fridge and bathroom.


Kicker- $5k all in with new tires and brakes. sure it wouldn't have been the ritz, but it would be a good adventure wagon. Even better for you guys in the states since gas is so much cheaper for you.

Nice, but way, way overkill if you're a single guy like me.

The only thing that complicates my thoughts on this subject is that along with one or two bicycles (which are easy to take) it would be really nice to also haul an ~400 lb motorcycle.

Other than that, my needs are very basic.
