About ten years ago I was on a United flight and noticed the overall bad condition of the plane. I took pictures and included them in an email to the airline showing frayed wiring, piles of dirt in the corners, missing latches in the galley, and torn carpet in the aisle. I got a nice response and a $100 travel credit.

My wife and I watch quite a bit of traveling related videos, and at least from what we've seen (sleeper and Shinkansen trains), the trains use porcelain thrones and not squat toilets.

That said, I, too have this irrational fear of squat toilets.

Several years ago now, we took our kids to Japan for two weeks. Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Tokyo. After we completed the (wonderful) Shinkansen ride to Tokyo, my oldest confessed that the only thing she didn’t like about the train was the squat toilet. The rest of us then told her about the Western toilet that was behind the other door, right across the hall from the squat toilet.

I know that the jet stream has been impacting flights over the past few days, but should I have been concerned about the arrivals board?

Hopefully the tech installers aren’t working on the planes.

Interesting podcast following a recent Boeing investor day meeting. No new plane design coming out until at least 2030 and certification discussions about the 737-7 and 737-10 MAX.

So many thoughts come to mind...

    - My standard passenger briefing was "Sit down, strap in, hang on, and shut up."

    - Another favorite: "As pilot-in-command, I will be the last person to exit the aircraft in the event of an emergency. If I yell 'EVACUATE THE AIRCRAFT!' and you reply 'What?!?', consider yourself to be pilot-in-command."

    - "Do you know the difference between doctors and pilots? Doctors bury their mistakes; pilots are buried with them..."

The airline industry is far closer to the movie "Airplane!" than most people uncomfortably imagine...

Correct. The name on my roll-aboard suitcase is “Rex Kramer” for a reason. Some get it. Most don’t.

    Best aviation documentary ever made.

Surely you can't be serious... I sometimes think I could write a humor/comedy book just describing actual experiences during my flying career. Notional titles include "As the Propeller Turns" and "Winging It".

Anyone remember Independence Air? Dennis Miller narrated their preflight announcements. “In the unlikely event of a water landing, you will not be happy so please pay attention to the flight attendant.” “For those of you in the left reading the NYT…for those of you in the right reading the WSJ…” they were good.

I watch movies on other people’s screens! The seat back in front of me is usually too close to watch comfortably with bifocals. I get a stiff neck otherwise. And the dialogue on most airplane movies isn’t elemental to understanding the movie.

I had an idea for a service that provides movie descriptions solely based on observations from airplane aisles. For instance, The Meg is a movie about the unlikely relationship that blossoms between a small swimming dog and an immense prehistoric shark.

Zero Hour is funnier, if you have seen Airplane first.

My fave aviation documentary is Dr. Strangelove.

When we lived in Prague I watched American television shows on a German TV channel dubbed in German. Strangest was seeing Hogan’s Heroes. One night I was watching this show about some women who did a lot of shopping then went to lunch and dinner or brunch and dinner then met a man and had sex. My wife came home and asked me what I was watching. I told her it was some American show about prostitutes. Later I was talking to a friend at a literary conference, and she was going on and on about this female empowerment show called Sex and the City and how great it was. I realized that was the show I thought was about prostitutes.

Sitting in Indianapolis waiting for LGA to clear our flight to take off for NYC due to high winds at LGA. Meanwhile all the JFK flights have left. Original departure 1PM. Now 3:30. Maybe.

Edit: 3:30 sort of. Landing was classic sideways up and down LaGuardia acrobatics.
