I always got a kick out of parallel approaches/landings, especially at airports with very close parallel runways (e.g., SFO, STL). It was a bit unnerving to see another aircraft that close as we approached the runway. The Lockheed JetStars that I flew had very high approach speeds (130-140 knots Vref) for their size, often higher than many airliners. We got more than a few remarks from controllers and other pilots as we caught up to and sometimes passed other aircraft.

With gust factors we’re well over 150 sometimes on a heavy -800.

SFO approaches are definitely unnervingly close parallels. I once was so close to an Air France 777-300, offset just behind and to the right that I asked tower if AF knew we were there. I did it mostly because I knew the AF guys/gals couldn’t see me but could hear me and were probably getting totally lit up on their TCAS and I wanted them to know that we were there and keeping them in sight and keeping visual separation.

I may or may not have photos of events like this. Maybe after I retire I’ll let people see them.

Last evening as I was out on the back porch listening to the crickets, I saw this extremely bright light moving at a high rate of speed over my house and according to my compass, heading NW to SE. I thought “wait, that can’t be the Space Station, can it?” A quick draw of the phone confirmed my suspicion and now I’m in the NASA system for text alerts. Carry on flight nerds and I will enjoy watching the crew flying at 17,240 mph, 245 miles above my rooftop.

A proper nerd will go out and buy a monster telescope. Ask yourself- 'What would Howard Wolowitz do?'

Besides, the whole Spot the Station website is just a deep state cover for the aliens who are visiting us. Do you really think this guy is human?

I watched this gent and his lady come in for a landing, park the Cessna, ask me where they could get a decent coffee, grab a coffee, then take off…in that order.

So $136.62* gas + $10 for the coffee, almost the same as Starbucks.

I always thought it would be nice to toss a bike (Brompton, if necessary) in the back, fly to someplace interesting, ride around for a few hours, maybe spend the night if it was feasible, then fly home.

Apparently this area draws a lot of fly fisherman and Dory charters were everywhere.

There used to be an annual ride, maybe still is, that started in Portland and ended, very conveniently, at Pacific City by the Pelican brewery.

I guess my phone got hacked and someone uploaded some flying pics. I hate it when that happens. Apparently the first one is SE Georgia, between Jacksonville and Savannah. The next one I'm told is Fermilab, in Batavia, west of Chicago. The third one is supposedly Portland, OR. No need to have any irrational fears. Please, rational fears only.

Who cares about Tevatrons, if that's really Fermilab, where are the bison?

This is where groundbreaking research on Higgs bison physics is undertaken. They’re too small to see.

    OK, that's a good one! :)

For those who hadn't herd (!!!) Fermilab does have a small herd of bison:
