Off the bike hats

My dermatologist advised me to shelter my balding dome from the sun. On the bike this is never a problem : I wear a cap under my helmet year round.

But off the bike a cycling cap looks ok until you’re about 13.

In winter a knitted hat is mandatory. I have an assortment of billed hats that work in a casual/weekend situation but could use some inspiration for a more formal occasion.

Stylewise : I rarely wear suits. Think polo (Fred Perry) or aloha shirts when the weather is 100% summer.

What we call a “Franse klak” (French cap) works in many situations but I’d like some extra zing compared to the style I recall from my grandfather…

As with everything regarding style, there’s no better place to ask than the Salon...

I have the same problem. I tend towards podium caps - basically a baseball-style cap done up like F-1 racing caps but with cycling logos of some sort. Castelli makes a bunch of them, but I try (unsuccessfully) to find something interesting. There seem to be a lot of MTN Qhubeka podium caps around. Wonder why?

Also billed running caps - they tend to be really lightweight and breathe well for summer. I used to have a Pakistani National cricket team hat a friend got me, but that disappeared from my luggage. And I have worn flyfishing caps that have the longer brim out front than normal caps. A bit eccentric.

But I'd go with the cycling podium cap.

I'm mostly wearing béret-casquettes (or french cap if you prefer). I don't really mind the vintage look as I'm often wearing them with more modern tees or sweat shirts, even with bermudas. Honestly most of them are offered by my partner but I'd just have a look at the headict offering if I was looking for a new one.

A clean navy-blue cap like Robin's does the job. Some would even wear it nicely with a suit.

I wear an all black GORUCK tac hat or my blue Zanconato baseball cap if I need a little extra face shade. If I'm in the yard or out at a kids game for a long time, I like to have my ears covered too - so I'll wear like a woven safari hat or something.

Im a Kangol fan. I have a few of the standard fitted baseball caps but they have a full range of really great looking hats.

Stefan has a good point: there's nothing more undermining to a man's self esteem than a partner who is not supportive of his head wear.
My wife actually mentioned an old school casquetterie in downtown BRU that I should pay a visit. The kind of store you want to save from the internet...

For cooler days and rainy days, I'd recommend a fur-felt fedora with a somewhat narrow (5.5-6cm) brim as you are a skinny cyclist. In the US, I'd recommend a vintage Dobbs or Cavanagh, but as you're in Europe, you should look to German manufacturers. Mayser and Wegener make nice hats.

For caps, I really like Wigens. They make a ventile cottom hat -- which is cool.

To be effective for me, it needs to shade my ears and the back of my neck. The ones in current rotation are these or much like them.I lean toward fedora's, mostly straw in summer. Cool and with the right shape and style, not too outre.

I have no caquetterie nearby and end up finding them at various sporting-goods and haberdasheries. Usually in the golf section. Fit matters and I seem to need to try them on even more than shoes, so I haven't had much luck buying online.

I resisted posting a flat brim baseball cap with the sticker still on the brim and a tag hanging off it. You are correct in your assessment of them. That image could only be bettered with a do rag underneath and soldier rag hanging out of the rear pocket of your sagging jeans. In case that cultural reference point is less prominent in Europe I'll warn to also avoid fedoras which are associated with an equally seedy social category..

The best option not mentioned yet is a thin stocking cap or watch cap worn in one many ways.

Ha - I'm sure every region has its typical local dress codes you don't want to be associated with... Here in BRU there's a certain group of youngsters that strut around wearing a Louis Vuiton cap but with the strap in it's most narrow position so it sits literally on top of the persons head, looking two sizes too small...

It's completely ridiculous but to them it's the epitome of cool...
