He is pumping and using the terrain rather than just being stiff and recovering on the downhill.

Not to take away from his brilliant decent, is he that much faster then the others or were they purposely getting rest as part of a stage race?

I spoke to Jose today and asked him about that downhill ( I wasn't in Africa as my wife was about to give birth) as a few people spoke to me about it yesterday. He said that he in fact had a really bad line as the other riders had taken the best route. The reason he flowed so well was down to his setup and the way he let the fork and shock do all the work which you can see in the film, one of his favourite parts of the race.
