I used to hang out with TONS of people until I was crippled & they kept riding, whereas I could not.

People drift away.

I wasn't even able to take myself out to lunch for 7 & 1/2 years, you wanna talk isolation…….

I'm very glad I work in a city shop, not a workshop out in the woods - I get people popping in all the time. Sometimes have to ask them to hold on while I finish a joint, but that's made up for by the lack of isolation. And customers like seeing how things are made.

One of my teachers told stories of various builders he knew who were "othered". Had challenges to their ability to go along with the crowd, so to speak. A few committed suicide, the teacher suffered partner issues. My retail peers have their sometimes tragic track records.

I tend to think that the fringe aspect of our business accepts and makes allowances for the strange/"others". Just look at some of our customers who can't get by in society and won't be allowed to have a car or a moving forward job. Or how can't fit in. Andy.

I think it takes a unique person to toil in near complete solitude. I'm very interested in the idea of energy transferral as being one of the differences between introverts and extroverts. Some people give energy and others take, and of course none of that is absolute either. I have less energy to give these days and some days I surround myself with those who have extra to give. Energy takers literally exhaust me I've found out. I suspect those among my peers who who have the least need for social interaction guard themselves from energy takers too. We all live in this world so finding the balance is key.

And don't understimate the fumes.

In the time I've spent building the couple of frames I've done so far I've revelled in the solitude and the chance to immerse myself in the process. I'm unsure if at frame 100 whether that will be the same but Ive always seeked solitude in my life in a lot of things Ive done.

When I'm working, I really like being left alone. I have worked closely with others on occasion, and it's ok if we are working as a team on the same thing and they know where their towel is, but as far as just random coworkers around me, I'm happy to stay in my work bubble.
If I were a full time builder, I'd be happy with that, but I do seek out social interaction outside of work. I'm not a complete hermit:)

Kevin, with complete isolation I think part of the creative process might also get lost. We all need influences and references to evolve, or at least I think so.

If you never listen new music, if you never read new books, if you never see other builders work or techniques, you might get stucked in your own recursive worm
