Exclamation Weld Mold 880 Tig wire in the UK?

Anyone know where you can get Weld Mold 880 tig rods in the UK?

Not really keen on getting some shipped over from the States, cost loads in postage and that!!!

Or even a stockist in Europe?

Henry James now carries it and shipping to the UK is pretty reasonable.

I've read that a weldmold rep admitted that 880 is simply relabeled 312.

One of the European Weldmold distributors we used to use pretty much said the same thing. They then dropped 880T as they had 'other rods that were comparable in composition'.

Huh, interesting. I think Jody Collier remarked that he noticed a lot of similarities between the two in one of his videos. Is 312 a rod that builders are using in steel frames with good results?

Alistair we did lots of mechanical tests ,the best performer wasn't St filler but it wasn't er70 either there was barely any difference in weld coupon with 880t or 312l so theres a pound and a half tube sat doing nothing ,especially when the 312 costs less than shipping 880

    Mike,

can you share what WAS the best performing filer in your tests? Just curious.

Looking around the web for some numbers, I'm getting consistent values of 120,000 psi Tensile/35% Elongation for 880T. Values for 312 seem to vary more, 103,000 - 106,000 psi for tensile/Elongation 25% - 40%. I guess that makes sense, since 880T is a proprietary formula, from one source, whereas basic 312 is a recipe that many mills produce.

Is it just a case of 880T being a higher end, more refined/higher purity version of regular old 312 (like vacuum melt maybe)?

Call me crazy and I do agree that they weld nearly the same but when I've blown them both on to non framebuilding type projects I've never seen the 880 sugar but have had the 312 sugar on me a bit.

On the other hand, the 312 has done just fine for me in framebuilding uses so there you go....
