Default Park HTR-1, plastic half nut?

I stripped out the plastic half nut on my Park HTR-1.

Park only supplies the plastic nut and while they are cheap enough I want to check to see what others are experiencing and if a 3rd party metal half nut is available.

The problem may be that I am using the tool with PF30 shells and 44mm head tubes on steel frames. I want a good smooth cut without any chatter so I may have been trying to put too much spring force on the arbor cone. I have had good results with this technique, the final cuts are smooth and the parts press in correctly but the forces have caused the plastic nut to strip out.

It seems possible that the original design for the arbor cone was really based on the smaller standards of the past and with the new bigger cutters the plastic nut is not strong enough.

What do you guys experience? Is this pilot error on my part or is moving to a metal half nut a good idea? Does anyone make a 3rd part lower cone or metal half nut for the park unit? Would making one be pretty simple (i.e. buying a nut and cut it in half)? Does anyone know what size nut?

I got sufficiently annoyed with the same process with 44mm head tubes that I had Todd Farr run with this basic design for a milling setup I sent him. I had seen lathe based setups for years but I don't own a lathe so I did the next best thing imho. Maybe that doesn't answer your question, but It's an option. I think Todd sells the part. It might be called the "Jon Greene" or something like that. Works very nice and always in spec.

Jonathan's is a nice solution. Todd is out in Taiwan now so he's not making framebuilding parts last I heard, paging Todd Farr! Besides, I want his fork jig first when he gets back:)
I made some metal nuts for a reamer/facer I made to use VAR cutters that were on sale when loosescrews closed shop. Not a quick release, but I've been pleased.
Made the cone to fit 12mm threaded rod that the VAR needed so it would take the Park 750.2 large size cone. Probably don't need my spring that long, may end up cutting it.
The Park pdf says the threaded rod is acme size.
