adidas samba, converse all star. I'm not a slip on leather shoe kinda guy but those suggestions amuse me, I assume they can't be anywhere near as comfortable as athletic shoes for walking around a city but ymmv

Chuck Taylors. Throw a decent insole in them and call it a day. Don't concern yourself with what people think.

In terms of soles, the division between a sport shoe and a dress shoe has dovetailed, particularly with brands like Cole-Haan that are now owned by sport shoe makers (Nike in this case.) They make a nice Italianesque loafer, called the Tucker Venetian, that is super comfortable. Which reminds me I need to stock up before it gets discontinued.

Nick - buy some dirty bucks with crepe soles. They don't last long, so stay under $100. 1901 from Nordstrom is your best bet. I mean, at least, these look like shoes a grown man would wear.

They don't look nearly as funky as it seems on the internet. I bought them for travel (in black) because they're so light and packable but have been wearing them pretty much any time I'm not in bike shoes since June. And the people that sell them are amazing in that scary Oregon way. They're so damn simple that they work with anything.

I think this is the review where the guy mentions he works in a "business casual' environment and wears them to work.

I need a pair of these. I'm afraid they'll be the only shoe I wear. Are they breathable or will my feet get super swampy? Should I wear a nice light merino sock w/ them.

I have a pair of Common Projects achilles low in light grey. They are well made, very high quality, but heavy shoes. I'd hate to wear them for 12 hours while putzing about an international city. But yes, they fit the bill for "looks good in shorts or pants".
