Default Headtube for Campagnolo integrated headset?

Well hullo everybody! My name is Caleb Lambert. I'm in Nelson BC, some hours north of Spokane WA.
I am a novice working on frame #3.
I've lurked and lurked, but today I'll ask my very own question(s).

uh, I had the Idea of building a bike with an 1 1/8" integrated Campy headset.
A little unwisely I bought the Campy headset, the park tool cutters for it, and the non-tapered 1 1/8" Columbus three piece integrated headtube from Nova all at once.
I didn't notice the difference between the Campy and the Columbus headsets. And I didn't notice that the Columbus headtube seems to be designed to take the Columbus/Cane Creek IS41 A-head set, not the Campy one.
the OD on the Campy cups is just under 42mm, the Columbus under 41mm.
they both feature the 45deg bearing seat.
So I've got the cutters for the Campy standard and could open the headtube rings with the 42mm cutters.
that wouldn't leave a lot left of the outside wall of the HT ring (but maybe the outside wall is just acting as a dust cover?)
And anyway, the OD on the headtube rings is 44.5mm and the OD of the topcap for the campy headset is 46mm.
the 1.5mm difference wouldn't look right.
Why on earth does the OD of the Columbus headset also come to 46mm if it is presumably the headset that the headtube was designed for?
The Columbus TAPERED headtube has a 46mm OD on the top half, but not the straight 1 1/8" HT that I have.
    Whaaaaa?

I'm wondering what are my options, short of making my own parts on a lathe.

Does anyone sell an integrated HT for IS42 with a 46mm OD?

Is the lesson here "if you want to use an integrated Campy headset you'd better have a way to turn your own headtubes."?

Henessey, can I jump on your lathe?

    Thanks in advance...
    Caleb

    caleb,

peter at ceeway has some stainless rings that are presized for IS42 and go with a 36mm head tube

they're on the what's new page, a little way down, and the code is 479S,

i think the 479 rings in mild steel in the bosses page are the same, though would be best to ask

    hope this might work ?

    oh
    good answer!
that looks like just the thing for me.
    awsome
    thank you
And I'm still curious about anyone else's approach to this or any integrated headset.
Do some of you make your own head tubes?

Try Solidbikes in Nor Cal. They have a large selection of integrated head tubes. However, I am not sure if they are 41 or 42.

    thanks for checking!
could I ask what the OD is on that HT?
I see that their straight OD HT is 44.5mm, 1.75"
I'm looking for 46mm on the outside.

Solid's straight HT is 44.5 on the OD and 42 on the ID. That's the same dimensions as the parts I have,
which might indicate that my problem is only a cosmetic one.
Shaun, what's the OD of the top cap on the headset your using?
Maybe I could build up the OD with a thin sleeve
    or even some JB weld....

Major OD is 44.3mm via quick caliper measurement (I have an hourglass shaped one here at the shop). I do have a straight one at home- I think they have the same OD at the ends, but I'll verify when I get home later.

    Please don't use JB Weld.

Whatever you do, don't open out the head rings. The outside walls are structural to the headset - were it not so, you'd basically just have a pair ob bearings balanced top and bottom of the head tube, held together by the steerer column but able to slide off centre ... the upper sidewalls are taking all the fore-aft load as the fork column tries to pivot about the lower head race under braking. If the headset is loose, that force is considerable - if it's correctly adjusted, virtually zero (but still marginally present) ...
