    I know ;-)

I don't understand the reason behind it - the proper cutting tools do a very good job, and do it quicker than setting up a lathe would take. Is it some macho thing to use as many big bits of equipment as possible?

No, I don't think so. The guys I'm thinking of are good people, talented machinist/framebuilder types. Smart individuals who have their processes figured out very well.

Anyway, this has been an interesting and civilized thread. I've got no dog in this fight, but I do I find learning about the different ways that different builders go about accomplishing a particular task, and their rationale for doing things a certain way, to be quite fascinating.

It does. Always use a tailstock or steady when length/diameter >3, according to machinist opinion.
