Cool and sucked: Modolo (thermo)plastic DT levers. Saved you about 5 grams over name-brand alloy, lasted about a third of a season before they snapped, unless you crashed before then. But you were cool!

Nothin' but suck: Benotto (sp?) shiny plastic bar tape; you needed at least two layers to get any cushioning effect (still marginal for anything past a 10 mile cat 4 crit), and it was as slick as a post-Zamboni hockey rink.
    Based on a true story.

Huh? Square taper sucked? You could use virtually any crank with any bottom on any bike (road or mtb or townie). I call THAT the good old days.

Sucked: every iteration of Shimano "road" clipless pedals until the current LOOKish pedals.

    Sucked:
Afros accompanied by head band and amber-vision
Extremely wind resistant unless of corse you were drafting behind said style guru.

    Sweet:
    Knee high tube socks
Kept shaved legs warm in winter, hidden in summer. also compensated for potential Afro wash [(strong eddies created when large afro encounters strong side wind) usually a spring time phenomenon]

Clearly, you were much too young back then to realize just how much more significant the "Sweet Mustache" was than mere ounces.
    Strangely enough, so was I.

The compatability part was great. But the performance of leaving a crank arm on the groud when it walked off was a bummer. Spined interface performance rules...except for the compatability to others. :(

And the Factory Pilots...I liked mine too. Saw a hipster wearing a pair over the weekend. They ain't dead yet.

    Things that sucked:

Onza Pedals (totaled out many a customer)
Grip Shift for road bikes (remember the ugly colors) worked like crap
    Cannondale Force 40 Brakes
    Cannondale Hydraulic Disc Brakes
about 90% of Coda stuff, now that I think about it
Replacing the axles on rear hubs all the time for anyone that weighed over 150 pounds
Replacing the bent axles on said hubs
Removing certain brands of freewheels to replace the above mentioned axles. Is this the time that the tool blows out? or will be the freewheel?

    Things that didn't suck:
The original Time pedal and shoe combos
    Onza Porcupine tires
    Cinelli cork bar tape
7 speed Ultegra, simple and simply worked like a champ. Especially when you had cassette hubs.
Cinelli quill bars and stems, loved them
    Turbomatic saddles

Customers at Proteus in Cabin John Maryland
The fumes from the triatheletes at College Park Bikes, in MD. (they ran, bikes, swam, ate, and vented.)
