Titanium chainstay replacement

I have a repair job that I think the safest thing to do is replace the stays. This job came in with a few pictures of the dropout/chainstay weld cracked, and ended up having a rub spot in the stay nearly 1/16" deep.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to getting some tapered oval Ti road stays so I can re-quote this repair?

You'll find that oval/round tapered ti chainstays are gonna be tough to find outside of contracting for a run to your specific spec.

I'd suggest taking a round tube of equal diameter to the existing stay, and swaging the bottom bracket end to match the oval width and length of the original stay. Probably will be the closest you will match for a single stay repair.

Be mindful of excellent cleaning and purge during the replacement, as it is easy to have oxygen inclusion at the dropout end with this type of design. A good micro adjust valve on your purge line goes a long way to preventing inclusion due to gas flow currents.

might be worth giving reynolds a shout for the part FT120, 30/21mm oval, tapered to 17mm tip, .9mm wall thickness, 410mm length (GBP£45.06 ex vat in 2014 price list) (paul@reynoldstechnology.biz)

it's not a stock item, though they sometimes have small quantities

ask paul to send the drawing too, he's really helpful with the technical aspect

Thanks! That's a huge stay. These guys are only 25/19 -> 16. I gave the customer a quote to replace both stays with straight gauge, and even that was expensive.

The math is all there. A 25mm/19mm stay was once a 22 (7/8") stay that was ovalized. The material moves equally. Went 3mm up and 3mm in. The swagging on the other end is just to make it a tad easier to attach to the drop out. If you are not experienced at capping a titanium drop out I would say the bullet is your best option. I am not a fan but if this is something you want to do and not get back as soon as it left the shop do what has the easier learning curve.
