    Default Airboat

I went on an Airboat ride in the Everglades a few weeks back. I had no idea people had cabins in the glades'. Nor did I know there is a whole culture of people who own airboats and go from cabin to cabin getting ripped.

    Not creepy at all...

Great photos, Joe! Where in the Everglades where you (as in your departure point)? I've spent the majority of my life in Florida and have never been...looks like I've been missing out.

I grew up "down that way" on the west coast of FL, and while airboats were fairly ubiquitous, I think I took a ride on one when I was very young and not since. They are very cool vessels, most of them one-offs, homemade, small block or small aircraft engines, hand throttles, cool stuff.

There's a local writer and novelist, Randy Wayne White, whose crime novels are set in old Florida, his main character the marine biologist Doc Ford, and the stories often touching upon the Everglades. I prefer his nonfiction, but it's light reading and entertaining stuff.

This was about 15 minutes from Boca Raton. It was clearly a put in for air boats, there were about a dozen of them.

We were on a friends air boat, it has a 350 small block and I am pretty sure no muffler of any kind.

The first hour was pretty cool. The nest 4 hours were a bit much!

Love the expression on the green frog's face. It's like he's totally chill with the situation.

I have no idea why they don't put mufflers on them. They are incredibly unpleasant

It's redneck FL. In college my pal had one and we would get sauced and go wrastle gators. Eff, we were stupid.
