    Default carbon fibre ISP tubing

    hi all

i've steadily been looking through the FNL threads, and have seen a few carbon fibre integreated seat masts in steel frames

looking at the ritchey wcs mast topper, for a UOS dimensions bike a 30.25mm topper probably would look best

i'd purchase suitable diameter 4130 CDS tubing and turn the OD and ID to the correct sizes, so that's no problem

where do you guys source your tubing ? i'm aware ENVE supply carbon tubing, but only to selected builders from what i've been told

i'm not a composites guy, nor have really much experience with it further than a bit of fibreglass boat repair, so making tubing isn't really an option for me

    many thanks

Try Rock West Composites in Utah, pretty sure they have off the shelf tubing. If you were situated down under I could oblige.

That is an undoubtedly odd OD and thus you will likely need a custom tube. Especially given the properties you will need.

btw, that topper was done for the 1st gen scott addict ISP and I've not seen another bike with that spec. Going 34.9 or even 35.2 will open a lot of tube doors for you but I understand the desire for the smaller HW and seat cluster.

Could you use a 28.6 tube from Enve or elsewhere with a 3" or so stainless sleeve at the top where the ISP clamps? Just turn some Stainless to slide over the 28.6 tubes and down enough for the 30.25 ISP. The question is whether the 28.6 carbon tube you use is strong enough for your purposes. I've seen quite a few carbon seat posts fail in CX races.

I assumed wrongly that he was matching to custom lugs.

    thanks all

progretto, you're not wrong in that i will make custom lugs at all, it's just i don't want a massive tubing diameter !

probably could use the 35.8 tube with a 38mm downtube, but i think that's slightly overkill for a road race bike !

the 28.6mm tube might be a little flexy if it's fairly thin wall ?

other option i guess would be if someone makes a 31.75 (1 1/4") ISP clamp ?

    many thanks

I've used a standard carbon tube size (31.8mm etc) and over wrapped additional carbon at the top to bring the OD up 34.9mm to fit an ISP topper.

people keep asking me for this ,you would think by now someone would have made an internally butted tube that is reniforced where the seatlug went and at the top wouldn't you ,i wonder how much you could sell one for

in theory, could you take a 28.6 tube, and externally wrap it up to the 30.25 size ?

would it make sense to do it just at the top ? or from just below the seat lug to the top ? kinda like an externally butted seat tube is ?

    thanks

theres a bloke 2 posts up done exactly what your asking

if your in the USA theres a couple of companies will wrap a tube up on diameter at the ends its easier than butting it (and thats really the wrong term i suppose)

In the UK try Carbon Fibre Tubes Ltd - Home they have range of off the shelf sections.

Simon is a good guy to deal with and can run custom section, pretty quickly if he has the correct mandrels.

    Hope that helps?
