    Default Jig Rust

Hi all. Wondering what (if anything) people use to inhibit rust on their jigs. I'm using a second hand Bringheli and it's already got a bit of surface rust on it. I have my shop in my garage for now, and I live in Portland where humidity is high in the winter. Feels like I should apply something. Lemon pledge? I would appreciate some advice. Thanks!

scotch brite off the surface stuff. Anything will work to prevent it. Machine oil, whatever. It's just steel.

For smaller tools, I've tried either cold-bluing or cold-blacking.
The gel kit here: Tool Black - Precision Brand Tool Black products for blackening steel and non-ferrous metals.
Needs to be oil free, and its messy and stinky, but it cuts down some of my rusting issues in my metal shed.

I use Scottoiler FS365 - meant for rust prevention on motorbikes. But I get loads because the company owner is a friend.

Fine Woodworking magazine did a shootout of rust protection products. Their winner was CRC 3-36, which can be purchased from McMaster Carr. I have used it, and it seems to work, but I didn't clean the rust off the things I used it on so it's hard to tell exactly how well it's working. A lot of people put T-9 on and wipe it off and then use paste wax.

hydrochloric acid (for poor people) or Evaporust (trade named product for rich people) both will convert rust , the acid way will need neutralizing before you oil it or wd40 it variations on the acid them include phosphoric and citric

i would have suggested it earlier but thought it was just light surface booo boo have a look here it might be usefull for others too

in fact some of these techniques are useful for cleaning mill scale from 4130 i just get a bit wary when someone on the internet says hey try acid and you dont know if the guy on the other end is sensible enough to use the tip wisely

On my Bringheli I painted all of the steel areas, except for the machined surface areas. For those I use Boeshield T-9 and it holds up pretty well. I remove any flux build up or shop dust or surface rust periodically with scotch brite.
