RIP
back when new york was cool.
I'm gutted. Saw him in Kansas City on the New York tour.
A Loss. RIP Lou.
An imperfect day.....
Real World persona : Andy Corso
Love has gone away
And there's no one here now
And there's nothing left to say
But, oh, how I miss him, baby
Oh, baby, come on and slip away
Thanks Lou.

He and Laurie Anderson live about mile from our place in Amagansett. See/saw one or the other of them pretty regularly. Neither of them are big people, even though I always thought of him as big. The last time I saw him, he was taking his dog for a walk out at Louse Point with the help of what I assumed to be his assistant but I guess now it might have been a nurse. Kind of strange to see Lou Reed get out of a BMW convertible and watch a shaggy dog trot down to the beach. Tough to see him hobbled by his ailments, but he had a long life even without all the stuff he did. Walk on the wild side indeed.
There are some live versions of Heroin and Sweet Jane out there I remember as being pretty incredible. They meant a lot to me at the time. He was a big hero of mine. My favorite quote, after he was asked about his writing, went something like, "Hey, I was just trying to write the Great American Novel, only I was doing it in song." I had no idea that someone like Lou Reed could be writing anything like a Great American Novel, especially since at the time just about everything and everyone was making me feel like the absolute antithesis of an American. I figured well maybe I could be a writer then too.
Keep walking Lou.

Man, I got a copy of Rock n' Roll Animal sometime before my first year in college and I just played the crap out of that record. I thought it was everything a rock and roll album should be. Listening to Transformer now. Sad.
That guy must have inspired thousands of people.
From the beautiful "Families":
And I don't think that I'll come home much anymore
No-no, I don't think I'll come home much again
Mama
Papa
Families
Often make each other cry
No, I don't think that I'll come home much anymore
(How's the families)
I'll be your mirror
Reflect what you are, in case you don't know
I'll be the wind, the rain and the sunset
The light on your door to show that you're home
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you
I find it hard to believe you don't know
The beauty that you are
But if you don't let me be your eyes
A hand in your darkness, so you won't be afraid
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you
I'll be your mirror

It was surprising how often I would see Lou around NYC over the years at plays, concerts, restaurants. He and his wife Laurie just seemed to be an integral part of the scenery.
I posted awhile ago about feeling a certain kinship to the demons that Lou and others have chased. I was lucky enough to find a way out of the dark hole that is addiction and am eternally gratefull for that. I do understand that others fight and fail and try again. Not saying you had to be in that dark place to "get" his music but I really felt his songs and lyrics. Thanks for linking the music Garro.

Lou had the ability to present people living on the fringe with empathy and insight. That's a huge thing. There are a good number of prigs and idiots who think, for example, that "Heroin" glorifies drug use. They will never understand the impact that song could have on someone like me, who wouldn't go near the drug for love or money.
For what it's worth, I think his best post-Velvets music came out of the period when he got sober: Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts, New Sensations, and even Live in Italy. It wasn't the drugs, it was the man.
GO!
Just saw where Paladia is showing a live performance of Berlin tonight at 8:00 PM.
