Default Cheap hotel accommodation in Portland?

I'll be in Portland for four nights from Sept 30 to Oct 4 and I need somewhere to stay. I'm planning on filling my days with hand built bicycles so I basically just want a clean bed. I'll have a car but no bike. Getting shot at isn't on my list of things to do while in the USA so a reasonably safe neighbourhood would be nice too.

Google brought up the Viking Motel and the Palms which both seem to be near the 'bicycle quarter' or the Super8 or the Shilo Inns over near the Columbia River.

I'll have a car so staying outside the city is an option if there is somewhere quaint? I'll be coming in and leaving from the North.

Does anyone have any suggestions? For less than $100/night I'm not expecting 5 star service - I just want somewhere clean.

You're killing me- come in the 29th and catch the last day of the Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show!

If you are on a budget and don't mind live music, the White Eagle is pretty darn cheap, and still gives a touch of "Old Portland".

You're killing me!! It's my mum's 70th birthday - hence the trip - so will be in Victoria BC and unable to make it down until the 30th.

I was hoping to make it down as far as Eugene but I'm not sure sorry Eric.

Exactly my thought. The OR handbuilt show is normally a pretty good time. I've managed to make the last several and even though the one in Bend was by far the best they've all been pretty good. They even let me in with my hand made tools, so I can't bad mouth them that much.

Hotel 50 downtown runs specials sometimes that are pretty good, might be able to find a mid week deal that's within your budget. If you're truly looking for something cheap you can always kick it with the hoe bows under the bridge, it's PDX so you're less likely to get shanked than if you were in LA sleeping under the bridge.

If you make it to Bend (which is about a million times better than Eugene or PDX) let me know.

You could always skip the hotel and try and bag something in a neighborhood you're interested in on Airbnb.com You can often have a furnished apartment or granny unit or what-have-you, for the price you'd pay for middle of the road motel. If you're fine with communal living, that's an ever cheaper option available.

These are some great places in good spots:
    $79/night super rad cottage:

Here's another totally rad spot and another personal cottage:

Cottage cheese for dinner, Greek yogurt for dessert, eat that everyday an' it will make your butt hurt.

Thanks! This is perfect - will feel more comfortable, I'll be able to make a nice coffee in the morning, etc etc. Booked it. Thanks for the heads-up.

Good luck. After a couple of Airbnb bookings that were cancelled by the host after the fact, I don't go there anymore. Some people list their own apartments and crash with a friend while you rent their bed. When their crashpad falls through they stay home and cancel your reservation. YMMV (I hope).

If you DO make it down, let me know. No worries though, I know how tight short trips can be.

Friends of mine stayed in this very place when they came into town for my wedding this summer. Place worked out great for them.

    You'll be happy.
