I started the day with physical therapy. My ROM is almost back to normal and they've started me on exercises that would normally be assigned a week later. I noticed a RoadID on one of the PT techs, yep, cyclist. He correctly guessed in which race I broke my collarbone.

My 105 groupset just arrived at the receptionist's desk.

I'm about to go meet the girlfriend for lunch.

It's a beautiful, sunny 77 degrees right now.

Last year at this time my daughter was still in the hospital, a month + stay.

Tomorrow I have to drive up to her college, as she’s having car trouble.

I”ll take silly car problems over health issues and laugh about it!

My wife has been in chronic pain since August. She had surgery on Tuesday of this week where they found the issue and fixed it. Even though there is post op pain its so nice to see without the pain that has deliberated her since August. I am very thankful.

It's been 2,800 days since I started my surgical residency. Today was my last day of elective operations at the main university hospital. While I was a little sad to finish, the cases went well and it's time to move on. 124 days left to graduation.

Plus, for some reason, my kids really like "stealing" my broccoli and eating it up. Vegetables FTW.

Friday night we celebrated the youngest's birthday. This could easily have been a grump.

Party was scheduled for 6pm at a location on the other side of Austin (laser tag/ arcade). I let wifey schedule it and wasn't going to say anything, but I knew it was going to be an absolute pain in the ass getting there. Because it's Austin, and Austin traffic sucks. Especially on a Friday. Especially, especially at 5pm.

We limited the number of kids to 6...as that's about $250.

We had 2
Family A had 2 + a daughter
Family B had 1
Family C had 1

Family B would just simply have to buy daughter coins for the arcade. Nothing major.

We left work at 5:10. 52min drive according to Google. UGH.

20mins into it Family B calls and says "we're going to be late. I'm at the store waiting for a prescription. gonna be 30 more mins."

ok, whatever, nothing major. Family A will still be there.

Right, Family A? Family A doesn't respond.

...nothing...

...chirp chirp...

Finally A responds, 45mins into the drive..."Sorry, daughter has been sick all day. We can't make it."

Now, wifey and Family A are pretty tight. Text each other all the time, church friends, Scouts, yadda yadda. So, when wifey reads that 5mins before the start of the party that Family A isn't going to make it, she gets pretty upset. Somewhere in the time, Family B is starting to sound like they won't make it, because of waiting for the script.

Family C in all of this has been non-committal. Finally sounding like they're going to be about an hour late, as they had just left. We had 3 rounds of laser tag scheduled to start at 6:30.

So we're 5mins from the place, it's 6pm and at this moment in time, it seems like maybe 1 person will show up, and they'll be too late to do the first round of laser tag. $250 party for the birthday boy, his brother, and 1 friend, who will be late. Awesome.

BUT HOT DAMN.

We get there, 10mins late, and suddenly wife's phone blows up. Family B is coming with their son and 11yr old daughter, Family C is one the way, with both of them expecting to be there in 15mins. The party staffers rearrange the schedule to accommodate us, and calm any stresses the wife had. It was awesome. The other kids show up about 20mins later and everyone gets ready in time to hit the first round of laser tag (which, again, was delayed for us). The "party planner" took complete control of the situation and did an excellent job. I was super impressed. And relieved.

End of the night, everyone went home quite happy. "Best birthday ever"...

Found this out yesterday: like a lot of wineries in the inland areas, the company where I'm working vintage has eliminated the use of sodium containing cleaners and uses potassium instead, despite being more expensive and less effective.

The idea is that while sodium accumulates in soil and groundwater, we can use the potassium containing wastewater outflow to irrigate a crop (in our case sorghum) which takes up potassium from the soil (think of NPK fertiliser). It being autumn, said crop has just been harvested and the company has linked up with a group who are organising drought relief in Queensland; it will be donated to feed stock in areas where the rains have failed this year.

As an addition: I said to the guy who is co-ordinating this that the media would be interested in the story, his response was "No, we don't want to make this about us, we want the group organising the relief to make the running."

This past week I had what has been the worst, sketchiest, most stressful air travel experience of my life to date, hands down. Today, I am home and happy to be alive! My big decision for the wknd is: ski or surf or paddleboard or try to do all of the above! I'll definitely be enjoying lots of beer w/my crew, either way!
