    Bill,

I'm curious about Serotta's repair capabilities.

I saw this on eBay (my size!) and its quite obvious to me that while it may be structurally sound it is not a factory repair:

Could the whole seat stay assembly have been removed and replaced?

What about the Meivici? Are individual tube replacements possible?

I am really liking the things I'm seeing on VS lately. Serotta is looking good these days.

Yes to both of your questions.

Repairs and refinishes are a meaningful part of our business. Please contact us if you have specific needs that might require a written estimate of work.

We, of course, warranty our work!

    Thanks.

I was trollin' on facebook and mined these images. Bill Watkins was the race face of Serotta long before 7-Eleven
knew what this sport was atmo. And look at us. We're all still here shuckin' and jivin' like it's a Prince record playin'
on Spotify. So Rusty, tell us about those days, and embellish them if you want to. PS Who's that sumbitch in the
    Avocet kit huh.

The Ottrott is an amazing frame. We use the materials in such a way that you are getting the most benefit out of their individual qualities. Carbon main tubes for "torsional stiffness" (industry buzzwords!) and titanium seat tube and chain-stays for "vertical compliance" (there they are again!) and ride quality. The titanium chainstays work in tandem with the carbon fiber seat stay. The titanium can act like a spring which is then dampened by the carbon fiber seat stay. We can also add bearings at the junction of the two sections to greater dissipate road vibrations and help keep the wheel planted. Carbon has great characteristics for dissipating vibration as it is a woven fiber and we have the ability to use multiple different stiffness options when designing the frame. The Ottrott is our most comfortable frame, but it is by no means a comfort frame.

These frames are also very repairable due to the lugged construction of dis-similar materials. We can remove seat-stays and replace with a new one, we can also remove main tubes...however both would need to be replaced as our tubes are mitered accurately to the mating tubes. Chain-stays and even the lugs can be replaced if needed. If a head-tube lug is damaged, say from the frame being garaged, we may need to replace the whole head tube assembly (along with the carbon main tubes)...but it can be done.

The Meivici is also repairable, however, less so than the Ottrott. We will only replace seat tubes, head tube assemblies, chain-stays, and seat-stays. We will not replace the main tubes as their is just too much labor associated with this type of repair. Please notice that I said "replace" the affected tube. We do not "patch" any carbon fiber sections as their is no way to test the viability of that repair on that individual frame that was repaired. We have tested replacement tubes in frames and the results are good as new!

I failed to add that we would not warranty the frame in question, even to the original owner as it is a non-authorized repair (patch). I do not believe that frame came back in the patched status, although it may have come back for an evaluation prior. We would have told the sender that a new seat-stay would be needed and finished accordingly. This is one case where we would not have needed to refinish the whole frame as we can mask the whole front end of the frame, however, there is a chance that the red tints would not match exactly. It is by no means "Checked by Serotta, and it is straight and true" (taken from Ebay listing).

Question for either Scott or Bill:
do you anticipate another custom Serotta model than the MeiVici like the HSG, which was, as I recall, available at a lower price point?
    Thanks,
    Joel

It would not be wise to detail our Product Development plans and it is really Ben who will determine where we go into the future. But, since he is not on the forums very often, I will simply answer "yes."

Chill out everyone, I'm sure Bill will give a proper well thought out and informative response when he can. Until then, don't get all huffy and enjoy the picz.

Sometimes you need a giant-ass Serotta.

    IMG_2423.jpg

Legend Ti, custom T-rex geometry. Just picked up this frame last week to replace my Fierte Ti. Shame about all the drama going on. I emailed asking for any specs they could give me days before it all happened. Guess I won't be getting a response to that one.

(There is actually a bit of saddle-to-bar drop here, it just doesn't show in this angle.)
