Default We Should Get Out In Front of This: The Return of the Fannypack

Last weekend I was walking through an outdoor store when my eye was caught by this:

Okay, so times are achangin'. When is it okay to wear a fannypack non-ironically?

Some might say never, ever again. While that might be a good general rule, there are exceptions. For example, this is entirely permissable:

If you have a gun in there you don't need to be able to do either.

If I saw a guy walking down the street with a fannypack, I'd assume there was a gun in it. The fact that I'm serious is probably indicative of how paranoid our society has become.

The reason the reincarnated fannypack caught my eye was it looked really useful for skiing and hiking with my dogs. With the dogs I'm usually carrying:

    - Treats
    - A leash
    - An ecollar remote
    - A Garmin Astro handheld
    - Wallet
    - Phone
    - Sometimes a camera
    - Sometimes a map

That's a lot of junk to fit in my pockets. As uncool as a fannypack might be, it seems really practical.

As for carrying a pistol, it's crossed my mind, although probably not for the sort of reasons that most people think about packing heat. Last summer I ran across at least two sick and aggressive raccoons while walking the dogs, and fortunately I was able to get the dogs away before a very bad situation could have transpired. The thought of sticking a little pistol like the new Walther PPK/S .22 in with all my other hiking and skiing junk has crossed my mind since I'd really rather not leave rabid animals running around on my hiking trails.

You need to drop for 20 for that offense.

And it's no surprise that this picture was taken inside a WalMart.

These have been big in Japan for a couple years -- the fanny pack as a shoulder bag.

Hey Hey Hey! So what would you rather see, a fanny pack or serious buttcrack looking like the Grand Canyon?

-->> Fannypack in earnest use in an outdoor activity; Okay. On the street? No.
-->> Nice to se Walther bringing back the PPK in .22...it was a very good chambering for that gun...the PP in .22 was truly a very practical pistol of it's type. Personally I would not use a PPK for the purposes you describe. There are other options. Since this is a bike forum, and not a gun forum. I'll suggest that if you care to exchange opinions you can PM me.
-->> For killing very small types of fauna...you don't need a real firearm. A good pellet pistol will do it and be easier/less hassle to obtain, carry, etc...
-->> Dunno where you live, caleb, and that of course does figure in to things, but it's not really your job generally to kill sick fauna unless they are in dire misery, and then a .22 may not be enough gun. Car-struck or poisoned coyote, car-struck deer, demented nasty bull raccoons, etc.. require at least a .22 magnum in my experience to get it done mercifully. Also, rabid raccon populations collapse fairly rapidly, so those guys will not be around long. NOT lecturing...just offering what may be a different POV.
--> Have you got your dogs belled? It helps.

    Best,

Chance "That's not the way I would have done it" Rider
