    Default FYI: Film isn't dead.

I heard someone ask, "They still make bikes out of steel?"

I think Pucci asked if people still use film. They do. Keith, a fantastic camera maker, does the ordering for big stuff. (http://1000words.kodak.com/2013/03/04/keith-canham/)

I challenge ya'll, grab your 35mm camera and put a roll of Kodak Gold in it. Take pictures and experience the surprise when you get them back from the drug store. Learn to construct a good picture, don't learn to edit the bad ones out.

    That is all.

    Awesome.

My folks are moving soon and I asked my mom not to toss her old Canon SLR. It was a damn good camera when she got it, mainly used to take photos to use as a reference for her watercolors. Gonna pick it up next time I'm home. My goal was exactly as you stated, to deliberately make good pictures.

FWIW, 35mm film is still WAAAAYYYY cheap.

50 sheets of color 5x7" film costs $400. Developing is another $200. Whereas 36 exposures of 35mm total cost is under $12.00.

Hell, even cheaper with some of the B&W film from Freestyle. The Arista Premium stuff, which is supposedly the same as Tri-X is 2.89 for 36 exp. It's not hard to develop it at home, either.

And it almost doesn't look like that's what you did.

Just got this from Deux North:

And have been shooting with this on rides lately:

Have yet to develop anything out of the Pen...need to run through a couple rolls. Curious about how it'll put up with moisture. I really miss my Pentax 67. Hanging out with the Manual For Speed guys made me really want a Mamiya 7 or RB67...

Sometimes even when you can't tell the difference there is joy in doing something in analog. It doesn't mean analog is quantifiably better in some way, just that it's fun for some people.

This thread really makes me want to run some film through my Olympus XA. Bonus -- the gf can get her students to develop my film for me.

Yeah, all except those pictures. You know... Unless you're into that sort of thing.

understandable. i was a photo editor in highschool and college, plenty of experience developing, printing, and re-printing, and re-printing, and re-printing. i can't even fathom spending that time today though. wife, 2 kids, busy job. i'd rather be out living life and riding, creating those picture worthy moments than spending the time to capture them in analog.

    DOOOOO ITTTTT!!!!!

Just process it in your coffee and fix it with a high-concentration salt water bath for 24 hours. Its perfect, you'll be brewing up a new cuppajoe right when your film's done.

That's pretty awesome! I've actually got everything I need to develop at home, but I want to get a new reel system. I have some non-ratcheting reels that I seem to always lose a frame or two on. But the gf's HS (where she teaches, not attends mind you) has a full photo lab, so I'll likely just pass them on to her for the childrens to develop.

This actually sounds like a fun little project. I'll probably have a couple rolls of DC/Balto stuff in a couple weeks. I've hit a digital rut, so this could be a way to jump start myself.

That Olympus Pen shoots half frame shots, correct?

Haha, that's why you have your 5D ready to document the analog process ;)

Any validity to a 35mm point and shoot? I love what you're saying, but don't want to carry a big camera around 24-7.

A year or two ago I was ready to hunt down one of those, but the size and weight seem a bit prohibitive. Fits in your center pocket easily enough?

Something like my XA is fine, but you're giving up a lot of "control" if you will. But for me that's kinda the point.

Something like a Ricoh GR-series camera is the bees knees for controlable film cameras -- still the size of a point and shoot. Kinda spendy though.

I have this in my car all the time:

Nikon made it to compete with a Leica back in the early 90s. It was about a grand then. I picked mine up for $200 about 2 years ago. I freaking love this camera!

The rollei xf 35 is another option
So is the Ricoh 500G (matches your Fiat Abarth too)
I think the Olympus XA has been mentioned.
Some of the Canon Elphs are 35 (some are APS which is STUPID)
Yashica made something called the Electro I've never shot with one but some people love em.

It's not free. Camera, media, software, printing media, time, time and time.

On a commercial level, clients are paying less and less and it costs more and more to produce the shoots.
