Are you just being a troll? Am I feeding a troll?

70 miles from Lake Placid, winter sports covered. I am sure local cross country trails exist. Cycling should be killer. You are just outside the Adirondacks so hiking, canoeing , you name it. Two small colleges in town so during the school year, I'd think town will not feel as small as it is.

I can think of many worse places.

Slight thread drift: I played bass for Naki Ataman back in the early 90s, and one of his favorite lines -- which I presumed was sincere, since the guy traveled all over the world -- was whenever someone said "This place sucks!" he would say "Anyone who thinks this place sucks has never been to Madagascar."

    No, I'm not trolling.

I'm interviewing at SUNY-Potsdam. I don't know anyone from that area and I've only ever driven through it at night.

Beautiful area great cycling IN SEASON, and it was -30F several days in the past few weeks.

I drove down to The Sebring 12/24 this weekend with a young man from Potsdam. He says that in the winter he gets lots of upper body training while he rides, beating his water bottles against his legs to break the ice so he can drink. A rule of thumb for him is, "no rides longer than 15 miles under -15 degrees. Strong rider by the way. At 20 he is just under 400Mi in a 24hr. race.

    Intro's available.

I grew up a few towns over...

The local bike shop is called The Treadmill and it's right in town at 55 Market St. The owner's name is Ted. Great guy. He's been in Potsdam forever and can answer any cycling related questions about the local scene, rides, races, etc. I've been gone too long to know what it's like these days, but whenever I'm home I always stop in and say hi. He also ran the Potsdam BMX track when I was a kid.

Some local favorites: Lake Placid Brewing UBU, Sergi's pizza rolls, and Jreck's subs.

As I'm sure you know, the SUNY system is in far better financial shape than anyplace public in California.

Do it! Not terribly far from Montreal if you want culture.

Montreal? Montreal for culture when you have Albany, the Paris of the Northeast a few short miles away?

Kidding. Potsdam is not a bad town at all, you may actually have winter there a couple of times a decade, the schools will definitely add life, it is really close to Montreal and Ottawa and if you want to ride hills head straight south. I wouldn't reject a work opportunity just because of the location. It's not for everybody but I can really see the attraction.

    Is it a relationship-killer?

I would not like being single in a small town like that. Very glad I moved from the city to where I now live as a married man.

Depends on where you're from. I don't think I know any native southern Californians who would last a year in Potsdam. If you grew up in snow country though, you might like it. I love the 'Dacks and could probably find a lot of positive things about living in Potsdam.

    First interview question:
"Do you know where Potsdam is?"

Of all the places I'm interviewing at, it's #2.

fwiw, having lived in LA and spent a lot of time in NE and upstate NY:

    1) The cycling will be better everywhere other than LA
    2) The people will be a little nicer / more normal and a LOT less good looking everywhere other than LA
    3) Everything else will be worse or much worse outside of LA

Very good question. I have been told, that the ration s something like 70/30/10 Male/female/deeper investigation required. When I went to college, I choose a place that was 30/70 Male/Female. I liked that.

Good point. Being a college town might save Potsdam, but most small towns aren't places I'd want to be single. To twist and old axiom: the odds are usually bad and the goods are often odd.
