    Default specific chainstays...

preface: i am not doing the repair (ok, i'll be mitering it), nor do i understand this particular burning need, but whatever...

so have a guy with an older (99-00ish) fisher hoo koo e koo frame that has some kind of sentimental value to him. ds chainstay is gouged pretty bad, and he wants it replaced. like, exactly if possible. which i don't think it is. first, it's a 19mm round at the bb, measures 18mm o.d. at the drop out, with a fairly pronounced (and dimpled inboard and out) s-bend (end measures approx. 77mm from bb), true temper triple butted vanadium sticker on the seat tube.

i haven't hunted this stuff much- is there anybody that even makes such a chainstay these days? seems like there's nothing out there (at least through a cursory search) smaller than 22 o.d.

i suggested replacing both chainstays just so they'll match, but he wants this to be as original as possible. again, i don't get it, but the man wants what he wants.

anybody have 1 or 3 of something laying around like this that'll work? even a straight 19/18 round that we could bend to match...

    thanks,
    abe

Use round 3/4" and bend to match. Not likely to notice a 1mm taper.

This is probably what was used at the factory rather than stays from an off the shelf tube set.

+1 on that. Should be a fairly EZ bend to make.

Provided it is not actually cracked, seems like it would be much less invasive to preserve the original chainstay and fill the gouge with braze.

i don't know- think you'd add probably a pound to the frame weight... i can't even figure out how this happened- the rest of the frame is immaculate.

Classic chain suck damage. Many times by the look of it too. I'd be tempted to just bondo before repainting. Hard to tell if there's a crack. If so then a very thin plate brazed over the damage would be my next thought. Anything to avoid replacing the stay, that would be my drop dead last choice. Andy.

Man, I'd fill that with silver and ride it.

I had similar damage to a Ritchey Softail. It now hinges about the left CS. That gouge in the middle looks similar to the one I had and that's where it broke even with a nice slather of brass over it. I'd be more inclined to fashion a patch to go over the top and wrap the stay a little then braze in place. Then you'd have extra meat for any further chain suck in the event that does happen again.
