Outside of dressing like a fool, which is obviously still fair game, the idea that there are set uniforms for certain classes of people or jobs is ludicrous.

Work boots are work boots because people use them for work. Not due to some inherent specificity of the boots.
A race bike is a bike that gets raced. Not a specific type or brand of bike.
A pea coat is a coat. If it's cold out and it's on you, it's appropriate.


Dress for context might be more appropriate than dress for what you do (and might be what you meant, I'll give you that)

I'm sitting on my ass on a Saturday reading VSalon wearing "work boots" built by a company that makes boots for loggers, denim jeans originally created for digging mines, and a sweatshirt that was designed to warm up for sporting type pursuits. I am doing none of those things, but damned if what I'm wearing isn't context appropriate.
