    Default Prolotherapy?

    Anyone have it done?

PT wanted me to get another cortisone shot. Dr wanted prolotherapy instead. Just curious how long the irritation lasts, etc.

I know everything you post will be anecdotal.

Also, anyone try platelet replacement therapy? Apparently that;s the next step for me if the prolo doesn't work.

Insurance denials aside, I'd go for prolo over cortisone. From what I know the lasting side effects are fewer. That said, I read a study a while back (useless w/o reference, I know) that found saline to be just as effective as cortisone. Theory held it was the irritant vs the "medicine" that caused the body to reset the inflammation process and begin healing.

    insurance doesn't cover acupuncture.

covers prolo because my Dr. defines it as something else.

I have had platelet rich plasma (PRP) on my neck which showed a medium case of athritis after years of abuse. After 3 sessions of PRP, my athritis symptoms have subsided. I no longer have a stiff neck for most of the day and riding the bike is much more enjoyable.

My wife has had prolotherapy performed on her achilles tendon (severe tendonitis) and it has helped tremendously.

My doctor uses a fluroscope so that he precisely inject the fluids. I beleive that not all doctors use one.

The only downside to PRP and prolotherapy is that it is not covered by my inusrance.

I've had cortisone injections and prolotherapy. Injection pain is about the same. I had no immediate short-term improvement on the knee that I had prolotherapy done, but long term, my tendonitis has not been back.

I too am interested in trying prolotherapy for some chronic knee tendonitis -- does anyone know of a good practitioner in or around Boston?

What are you trying to fix?

My wife has been strongly cautioned against prolotherapy due to the specific nature of her issues. PM me if you want details.

Trying to fix a hamstring issue that's been around since last June.

After deep tissue massage and PT (Oct-Jan) PT finally said, "There's nothing more I can try."

Dr. wants 3 rounds of prolo and then move up to PRT. (Round 3 is scheduled for this Friday... I'm thinking its quackery)
    Lumbar MRI shows nothing.
    (Yes, I've been re-fit twice.)
