You're far from the only one with that impression, the 29+ 120tpi version was intended to be as supple as a Racing Ralph Evo and is probably less durable (especially on the wide rims that expose the sidewalls more)

the wire bead 27tpi tires are more what you'd expect from Surly (and apparently the 26" 120tpi tire is like their previous ones too)

Hey, Kris.... Just dropping a quick note to say, "Hello."
It's been a long time since we talked back in our EWR days.....
The OWB has been sitting unbuilt in my garage bike "shop" area. If you remember, it was a small.... and perfect for me. Couldn't agree more with what you said earlier in the thread... Our East Coast terrain... the possibility of a dab needed lower than the level of where the wheels are sitting, etc.... With my freakish build... Super short legs and a long torso.... Standover is KEY for me...
Giving consideration to bigger wheels... Not two-nine... but thinking I'll give SixFiddy a whirl. And, have had the itch to get back to riding hardtails for quite some time.
Been keeping a silent eye on 44 ... Awesome work that you're doing man.....
Thinking that I may have to start a new frame fund for a 44......

Good to see you over here. Welcome! I finished a build earlier this season for someone who has a similar build to yours which was a 650b. Long torso super short inseam. He's been ripping things up on his build. Quick shot of the build:

I believe the frame was about 12" from the center of the bb to the top of the top tube. For shorter riders who want the benefits of big wheels but the agility of 26", 650b is where it's at. I've built a bunch for clients this past summer. This one also turned out quite nice:

Saw that bike on Facebook and my jaw dropped. Reminds me of my old Willits Jr Cross. What sort of tire clearance has it got?

The ENVE cross fork states 1.9" clearance. I've built it so if she wants to bump up to a 35c she has plenty of room. She could go even bigger if she wanted. They are currently 32c. The wheelset is tubeless compatible, but since this bike is TIG welded, has a Carbon Tapered fork AND has disc brakes with 135mm spacing and oversized tubing... Oh and did I mention it's 11 speed? This one goes to 11. Literally. I did not want to push Richard too far into outer space (he wanted something clean and modern however). But they are compatible should they decide to give tubeless a go. All about the flexibility. It's 19lbs on the nose which is not too bad IMO for all that it's got.

Such an aestheically pleasing bike. Almost bordering on perfection.
