Musgrave you are a class A enabler.

FWIIW My first moto was a Honda SilverWing and it would not die. It was good for long and short trips and virtually maintenence free esp. if you did no maintenence. I put 20,000 miles on it and sold for what I paid. It ran out of gas once and a moto policeman stopped to help. His words "oh you are out of gas, I was sure you weren't broken down...it's a Honda"...he popped a fuel line off his Harley and drained a few soda cans of gas into my tank. Gotta love the cult of riders.

Just be careful Nate, a 500lb moto is a lot different than a 15lb Pina...wipeouts are exponentially worse.

As long as they don't let me race any flattrack, I think I'll be all right.

Ninja 250 - added to list.

Take the SV650 in slightly different guise and get a Vstrom 650. Much easier on the body over long distances and plenty of carrying capacity.

Beware of non original paint and missing bodywork (cue the white FZR). Good indication that the bike has been heavily flogged. Keep your eyes peeled for a ninja 500 as well. Lots of them of them out there.

All I have to add to this thread is that if I found a 55 or 56cm Dogma with 11-speed Record and Boras in my garage for two weeks, I am 100% certain I wouldn't notice that my Ninja 250 was gone. So if you want to start your road trip from Chappaqua, NY...

Watch out for those. I was in the market 12 yrs. ago but something put me off...whispers of broken motor mounts...other things I can't remember.

True, this was a weakpoint of the 900SS in any of it's varients. But, those that are still rolling today, and coming from reputable sellers (which this one would be), have easily corrected this. Nichols has been fixing this problem for years.

Ah the venerable Nichols mfg down the street...

Those things are great -- small enough, powerful enough, best sound ever. In some ways I wish I had purchased one over the st2.

I love the air cooled motors. The '96 900SS/SP was one of the best and most fun bikes I ever owned. Beautiful design. Great sound. Enough power to be fun but not so much that you spit yourself off easily. Very reliable motor all things considered.

I had a '96 and have a '97 now, love love that bike. I put thousands of miles on my '96, some great times. I've put 300 on my '97 in the last three years though... :(
