Default Sushi rolls for the bike.

I'm tired of Bonk breakers, Cliff bars, GUs, NUUN, etc. I'm also just not digging sweet food on the bike as much... makes my teeth feel slimy.

Made some sushi rolls to try out yesterday. Not such a bad thing.

Reduced the amount of vinegar/sugar mixture by about 2/3 to keep the rice a bit dryer (also made 1 w/out vinegar cuz the lady doesn't dig it).
Threw in baked bacon, scrambled egg, steamed carrot, raw string bean (for texture) and cream cheese.
Double roll with nori cuz it'll get a little soggy if you don't.

Taste better than Lim's rice cakes and they don't fall apart when you unwrap em.

Wrapping in plastic wrap is ok but probably better to do it in butcher paper so that you can unwrap em easier on the bike.

Dunno if yinz dig savory on the bike but it certainly was a nice change.

I'd never thought of this, but I'm eager to give it a shot. Having a gluten allergy really limits your choice of bike food, but this may be the ticket.

    Brah,

Also thinking that one could maybe use those spring roll wrappers if you don't dig the nori. Do em small and tight... could be the tits.

talent is hitting a target no one else can hit, genius is hitting a target no one else can see. You sir are a genius. I will be doing this by the weekend with the nori and perhaps trying to squeeze some peanut butter and rasins in there with the bacon.

Right on. Love the sticky rice. You have me thinking, great ideas. I've been itching to make sticky rice bombs with "inclusions". Spring roll wrapers, wow.

Spam Musubi. World's most perfect food. The spam can can be used for the rice mold in a pinch.

this is one recipe. there are other ways to do these.

I've never had spam. But I'm seriously considering trying it out just for this.

These are a bunch easier to make if you use a musubi mold and a spam cutter (like a hard boiled egg slicer, but spam sized). Uniformity on the spam slice helps with the cooking.

Whenever i eat at an Indian restaurant I get an order of vegetable samosas to go to either eat for breakfast before the ride or on the ride. Not as healthy as the sushi but damn good.

I can think of a half dozen rides this year where if i'd had one or two of these I wouldn't have wasted the last 2 hours of each dreaming up what to eat when I got home.
There's a Hawaiian grill type place two towns over and When I place a to-go order I will always add a couple spam musubi's on just so I can make it home without fainting.
    Good call.

If they do not have them, they have no business calling themselves a hawaiian place.

No doubt. It's authentic. Nearly completely uninteligeable pidgen english and the whole works.

I overcome ordering difficulties by just talking really loudly and randomly adding an O to the end of certain words :-)

Tell them that you want the Ono grindz and they will set up up. Ask if they have squid luau. It is the most disgusting looking stuff, but really tasty.

when I bike toured Japan, a friend I stayed with made me rice balls wrapped in nori for the road. they were stuffed with cooked salmon and tuna salad. I also had some dried codfish from Hokkaido. yum.

Chances are if you have a Japanese Supermarket in the area, they will also sell O-Nigiri (rice balls). It was always a favorite of mine in Japan. Onigiri with Pocari Sweat to wash it down. And if that didn't do it, just swing by a vending machine and buy a can coffee.

As for Lim Cakes, these are really good if made properly. Sticky rice is a must. Add a little extra water to get extra sticky. Instead of regular Soy Sauce use Japanese Dashi Soyu (which is lighter and more flavorful). After you make the Lim Cakes, you press down hard in the pan to squish the rice tight and let sit over night in the fridge to settle and harden. That way, lime cakes will not fall apart on a ride.

I make these pretty regularly and bring extra on rides. So far, no one has complained. Although maybe DarrenCt is just polite.
