Clean up finished on the head tube...

Curious about clean up prior to finishing all brazing. Is the "normal" process to clean each joint as you go or braze everything then go back and clean up stuff.

I can't say what is 'normal'. As the thread reads...this is Bike 0001. I can only tell you the way that I have done it so far...
others may chime in and add better methods.

I first brazed the derailleur hanger, cable tunnel, and water bosses...then cleaned them up. Welding them up as individual tube pieces covers you in case of a catastrophy.
I took a logical approach and tackled it as sub-assemblies,proceeding only when I was satisfied with the prior.

I then brazed the front triangle: Then one lug area at a time, I have cleaned them up. Being my first frame...I was pretty sloppy (new to silver brazing). Most out there are
far better at adding only the needed material, which in turn equals less clean up. (Look at RS for an example of his lugs...he WHISPERS after brazing, then sends them to paint. LOL)

This weekend I plan to braze up the rear dropouts to the CS and ST, as well as the seat stay caps...then clean them up.

Finally I will attach the rear triangle...and proceed with clean up.

Then after everything is final...I plan on another once over with a fine tooth comb.

Question time::::::::

I know I've heard this before, but I want to be sure... Braze up the rear droputs with brass, braze seat stay caps with brass...then attach as normal to the front traingle with silver???

Also, on the details of joining the dropout sockets, with it being essentially a butt-joint with an insert...should I bevel the joint area on both sides to give the brass more surface contact?
Essentially create a 'Vee' with a micro file??

A final alignment check tonight...and on a side note, I did have to pull one of my seat stays 'up the hill' about 2mm into the seat lug and redrill a pin hole.
When you chock a wheel up in those drop-outs...IT DOESNT LIE!! LOL

I plan on brazing the drop outs and the seat stay caps...then pulling the pins and cleaning up the individual legs,
I want to work on my final fit at the seat lug with rigid limbs back there.
(and it gives me one more look at alignment before final brazing, in case something changes.)

Luke- I've only used a few socketed drop outs and treated them just like a lug socket WRT the fit, best i could. I did use a ring insert and sweated the silver out, then added a touch to fill out the shore line.

As to the SS- Not sure i understand your proposed sequence but I usually braze the seat lug end first, then one drop out next. Check for alignment, pin and braze the second drop out/SS last. Andy.

To clarify my issue (and explain my half-ass sequence) Andy, what I'm having an issue with is the fit of my seat stay cap against the seat tube lug. I've gotten it very close, but it doesnt 'lay' in like I want it to yet.
With the caps not permanently affixed (just pinned with a tight fit) they move around as I'm trying to establish a precise filed fit. By brazing up the cap to the seat stay, as well as attaching the dropouts,
I will have a rigid triangle that I can install/remove to exact the fit at that top lug. Then when I'm happy with the backside coping of the seat stay cap, I will attach the entire rear assembly.
Clearer explanation?? LOL

I think I will wrap some thin sheet silver around the inner prong of the dropouts, to add some internal adhesion. Thanks for the idea.
