Default A Q for the painters.

    Hi all,

I have a paint-specific question. I need to have some spray masks made and I'm wondering for what in particular I should be asking when I call the sign shop. Is there a specific kind of low-adhesive vinyl or something similar that's the preferred choice?

    Thanks

Someone wiser will chime in, but I think that Oracal 651 will do it. That is the lower adhesive one with Oracal 751 being the type that you stick and leave on.

    :shrugs:

FWIW... this stuff is also supposed to hold up to powdercoating temps too and has been on my perpetual 'to try out' list.

I'm no painter, but yes there's a specific vinyl and the shop should know which one it is. I don't know the part number/mfg but what they use 'round here is a "weak" blue about like the blue header where you see the "x hours ago" and "post #" above.

There is a paint specific vinyl, which is low adhesive and transparent so you can see what you're doing. I cut the masks for my painter myself but get the vinyl from him to do it with. I did a quick ebay check and found lots mainly under airbrush accessories in case your sign shop doesn't have it.

I wound up just calling around to a few places until someone knew what I was talking about. Thanks greatly for the suggestions - much obliged!

Just to chime in ... I gave up on the mask only vinyl a while ago because it didn't stick well enough in detailed situations, like small lettering. It left gaps that I couldn't keep stuck down. So I want with a mid strength vinyl. Oracal makes a number of different strength adhesives and their high strength adhesive SUCKS! Oracal 651 seems to work the best. It sticks really well ... too well it seems until you heat up the frame to about 170 degrees. At that heat, the stencils pull really well. My sign cutter knows what I need and simply uses it when I order stencils. I do all the art work here on CorelDRAW, send the vector files to my guy and he just does the cutting. Hope this helps.

Here is what I use: Avery | buy SF 100 Paint Mask from Advantage Sign Supply I've tried all kinds of stuff and this works quite well for me for most applications and cuts well in my cutter. For small lettering or really fine stuff I use Oramask Typ 813...its a thinner, more rigid material that cuts cleanly. However, it can leave an adhesive residue when heated during force drying, etc.
