    Default B r i f t e r s

Love them or hate them, they are here for now.

Brand name notwithstanding, this is "who they are"

    I don't give a crap who makes them, I don't like them.

You got a problem with that? it's not like I'm taking yours away......

    eh...

I used to use that word once in a while, but sometimes people would say "what's a b______?" and I'd have to explain it, and tell them who Sheldon Brown was, and all of that. It got tiring. Now I just say shifter, or ergolever, or STI lever.

That's interesting, maybe it's a regional thing 'cause up this way, if you ride, no explaination is needed....

BINGO! Winner winner winner (confetti falls from the ceiling, blow horns go off and dancing monkeys emerge)

Some words are best not uttered.

Shifters is just fine in modern vernacular.

Why is that? It describes a part made by several companies that is used on most bikes by people who like that sort of thing.

A generic grouping of similar manufactuers products. Why do you find that stupid?

Sorry but if you say shifters I see down tube, bar end, stem mounted, twist, thumb, suicide shifts, etc.. Oddly I don't think of brake levers with built in shifters at all

If a company called them b_______ in their literature I'd be more inclined to call them that, but they don't. Why make up a word when there are perfectly suitable words everyone already understands?

Nobody has ever been confused by my calling them "shifters".

As I wrote above that is way to broad a term, bringing with it all of the variations (and then some) to mind.

Not specific enough. Maybe on the start line of a race but that ain't the real world.....

I'm trying to think of a sentence where the word "shifters" as it relates to bicycles isn't specific enough, and failing.

I'd argue the dustbin's got some extra room.

In my world, the last checklist item before applying take-off power is to identify the assigned runway by calling out "Assigned Runway". This has on occasion been shortened to "Assway". It is wildly inappropriate and would never happen in my airplane. Wink wink, nod nod.

Maybe a better word than b r i f t e r would be Shrakever. It just rolls off the tongue so much more smoothly.

Me too. Shifter? Oh! You mean the thing that makes the derailleur move regardless of where it's mounted.

Brunch is acceptable because it provides a reasonable excuse to drink before lunch. Drinking at breakfast is tacky, drinking at brunch is refined. No need for a made up meal to justify drinking after noon.
