Can I wear a striped shirt and a suit?

I have a bunch of interviews in the next month and the suit will be getting more action than usual. So I wonder can I wear a white shirt with thin black stripes with a dark gray suit?

I am a tech guy, this is pushing the limits of my fashion knowledge.

There is absolutely no prohibition against wearing a striped shirt with a suit. The ultra-traditional rules are, generally, (1) either your suit or your shirt can be striped/patterned but not both, and (2) the pattern on your your tie should be visually "bigger" than the stripes on your shirt. Because your shirt has narrow stripes and lots of white space, most ties will fit the bill just fine.

Of course there are plenty of men who flaunt these rules with great success, but it takes a certain eye to do it.

Be prepared to be way overdressed than the people interviewing you (just don't flaunt it). At least, that's what happens to me when I interview for programming/manager jobs.

Yeah its a tricky one in the tech field, if you come off too dressed up/pro it rubs some the wrong way.

In Europe the rule is: Shirts with stripes - ties without (any pattern) any vice versa.

IMHO, i think it is best to wear a solid white shirt on a job interview. The more conservative the better. That said, i work in tech as well, and i usually work tee-shirts to work.

^THIS. Not the tagline...the advice. Trust RIHans, and by extension..Me. Just do it. Save the striped shirt for after you get the job.

My rule of thumb is always wear a texture, a pattern and a solid color. Seems to get the job done. Best of luck!
